It really a simple thing... Kar98 does more Torso/head damage than the MK2 Carbine, but the MK2 Carbine does more limb damage and handles/fires twice as fast as the Kar. The Carbine actually does a little bit more headshot damage at long range (70+ meters) than the Kar98. I think Tim would of had more luck if he had the Focus Perk.
