When Zayn left I was upset at first but I decided to put myself in his shoes and if you think about it when he first started out, being in 1d was a once in a lifetime opportunity so even though he auditioned as a solo artist ofc he joined the group rather than risk never living his dream and he probably enjoyed the first few years but in the last few months he probably started to feel a bit trapped, with modest probably telling him who to be and the music not being his style he started to question why he was even doing this if he wasn't happy anymore and he finally had enough. I think he lost himself trying to make everyone else happy and he left bc he wanted the chance to find out who Zayn really is, I don't blame him at all for leaving 1d I mean do I think it could've been handled differently? yes but I'm just glad that he's happy now that's what's most important.
