ASL is vastly different from BSL. ASL is actually based in LSF (French Sign Language), and that's especially evident when you compare the fingerspelling systems of all three. Signed Language migration and change doesn't necessarily follow spoken language change and migration, and you can't just assume that all signed languages of predominantly English-speaking countries will develop similar signed languages. Anyway, I think he probably saw an interpreter and mimicked her, and that's why he was signing. He is using ASL, not BSL btw. -a Deaf linguistics geek Also, I know that he was trying to sign "thank you," but when it comes from under the chin, it actually translates to "fuck you," and I can't stop laughing.

Lovelylawley definitely. I 'speak' BSL. The two sign languages are not too compatible and it causes a lot of trouble when we travel to the USA.

Pinkyidion Productions I think that he's learned a combination of both (probably not fluently for either). All of the boys used signs with each other a lot, and they seemed to use a combination of ASL/BSL and some "home made signs" to communicate with each other over the years.
