This album was during their 3rd year together so I think they were really missing home and their families. I think in an interview from that year (a press conference i think) Louis said that his mom told him that he had been home only five times in the three years that they had been on the road, and that he didn't realize that it was as little as that. When they left the X Factor, they didn't really stay home for long. They went home, packed their stuff, and were whisked off into the world of fame without knowing just how far they were going to go. So I think that this whole "missing home theme" as Bushy Mama put it was correct and they put their feelings into their music.

The song is so personal for them because at that point they were really missing home and their families as they’ve been away for so long. And as for the fan project, it was an Italian flag behind “We Are 1D Family” and on the ground level, one half of the crowd had the british flag and the other half had the Irish one.

Thank you so much for this, it’s one of my favorites and the live performance is so iconic and memorable. And yeah this is part of the 1D charm, they sing and enjoy themselves, not like a performance or a job they have to complete. They genuinely loved being on stage and spending the night doing what they loved and sharing it with fans who go above and beyond to pay them back with fan projects to make it memorable to the band as well as for fans themselves.
