The song is about 1D but not what most people think. Zayn loved his 1D boys. This is about his anxiety and intentional isolation. This is about stress of being that big in the industry and not feeling valued by management. When he sings "I'd rather be anywhere, anywhere but here" he's referencing his distress. He wishes he could be like the other boys and embrace the fame of 1D. When he sings, 'I pray to God I didn't waste all my good years" he's meaning I hope I didn't waste that incredible experience with my own issues. When he sings "I close my eyes I can see a crowd of a thousand tears" he's saying when I close my eyes I can see myself touring and my fans being proud of me but... I now realize singing alone on stage is actually more anxiety-ridden than singing with the 1D boys on stage. At least they had my back. Being solo artist is satisfying for him because he can express himself but he still has performance anxiety. I believe in this theory because Zayn has dealt with all of this. In 1D and outside of it. Zayn and 1D do not hate each other.

Oh my god thank you so much for this alternate meaning of the song! I used to feel so upset when I thought this was him saying how he wasted his good years in the band, but as someone who has anxiety myself I know how easy it can he to miss good moments in the present because of racing thoughts and overthinking things. It's just so sad and heartbreaking that Zayn had to leave behind four guys he loved, and the people who helped him be comfortable performing, for the kind of music he wanted to make. He shouldn't have had to choose.

I completely agree with everything except for the lyric about tears. I always interpreted it as Directioners being upset and crying about the fact that he left. To me, that lyric shows that he had been debating leaving the band for longer than we may have thought. I personally think it was at least the last 2 years he was in the band, and since he was conflicted, he often pictured how we as fans would react. It's really cool to see how you interpreted it too though!

I think the “I pray to god I didn’t waste all my good years” is more so because while he was in the band he went through so much (his ed, anxiety, islamophobia, etc.) but he calls it good years because it still was some of the best years of his life. I feel like he’s sort of confused on how he should feel because they were good years but at the same time there’s many things that happened that might make him feel like it was wasted time. That’s how I interprete it at least.

While what you said was and is certainly true. I think when he says he prays that he didn’t waste his good years. He means like in the early adulthood stages (19-24) is meant to be when people have the time of their lives. Many college students. Party. Drink. Go out with friends. While he may have never hated one direction. He might have had other intentions in his life other than being in the crazy amount of spotlight. Most likely his anxiety got in the way of actually enjoying the experience like the other boys. He is a very naturally talented singer. However singing might not be his intentions for his own life. And that’s totally ok. And because of how busy they were he couldn’t slow down or stop to actually take care of his anxiety. I think that’s what he means he prays that his good years weren’t wasted. He knows he can’t bring back the time. Maybe he didn’t necessarily enjoy the fame and money or the constant travel. And hopes that he doesn’t regret not fully living the young adulthood or “fun years” by being in the band. He knows that after a certain age he can’t do all the fun stuff. He has to be adulting now and being the best father he can be

He calls it good years because it's some of the biggest moments in his life. He loved the boys, you can see it in this whole video. He didn't love the management the restrictions it behold. He went through a lot of stuff like xenophobia, Islamophobia being called a terrorist, drug accusations, cheating rumours and the most famous one "his bad boy persona." In the start of 2011 he looked happy but as the years passed by he started look solemn. He is dealing with anxiety and had an eating disorder. For the first time you hear this, you automatically feel like he threw shade which even I thought. But he didn't, he just hoped that he could been a normal boy from Bradford and live his life without all the rumours. He isn't sharing the boys, he is sharing the years that ruined him which also had some great memories ( the boys).
