Fun fact: since 2006, the use of white grapes is prohibited under the Chianti Classico classification. Thus, at the moment of shooting, the waiter was correct in suggesting a white Chianti Classico, but that wouldn't happen today.

@currantbun While true that white wine can be made from red grapes, I would say it is not that common, and mostly seen in sparkling wines. And it is important to note the difference between the grape and the wine colour. White grape varieties are prohibited, not white wine. Hope that helps.

There comes a point in every Connery Bond movie where the Bond girl just gives up and lets the boys fight it out, usually by the end of the second act. Tanya has by this point in the movie already shut down. She's ready for her nap. Good thing she (and later Domino) wakes up again at the very, very, VERY end.

That is the shittest spike I've ever seen, even Bond couldn't believe how shit that spike was. He couldn't be more blatant if he tried, just chucking them in the drink half through a conversation would've aroused the same amount of suspicion but Jimmy knows the score so he keeps it shtum.

@@thedragondemands5186 I believe - since my brother knew a sommelier - it's good ettiquette - when you pour wine, you hold the base not the neck when pouring wine. Bond knows his booze but, at the time, civil servants (that's who Grant is pretending to be) will adopt good ettiquette in serving. However, although he knew he spiked the drink, I think he assumed that Grant's "tradecraft" was amateurish so let it slide.

It's pretty crazy that these were the only direct contact Bond had with Red Grant. He was merely just a haunting apparition or a guardian devil throughout the film which elevates the tension, because you just don't know who was pulling the strings the entire time.

It was the sum of many clues. I believe Grant having a full Windsor knot on his tie was another sign. In the end he came across as a combination of no idea, or else ideas that were a generation or two out of date for the time. Grant basically managed a "How do you do, fellow kids" on himself.

Is there a white chianti? Hannibal ate his liver with a nice chianti-was it red or white?
@andrewklang809
@andrewklang809 Жыл бұрын
Ideally, you don't want the food to have a stronger taste than the drink, so Chianti (red's the only way to get it these days), which is a very strong, very dry wine, is recommended for foods with very strong taste that would overwhelm most other wines. Stuff with tomato sauce, spiced meats, sharp cheeses, or a lot of seasonings. Lasagna, pizza, sausage. Liver, while not fitting in this group, nonetheless has a very strong taste. Pairing it with Chianti would make sense, as would Syrah, Petit Syrah, a strong Garnache, or Zinfandel. Anything strong and dry and/or spicy. Lighter, fruitier wines like Merlot, Cabernet, Malbec, or Pinot Noir pair better with milder foods you still want to be able to taste, like steak, or a burger. Red chianti would destroy fish. You get just a little bit of chianti on your tongue, you will not taste white fish, not even catfish or tilapia. Fish is best paired with a fruity white, like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. I've never had white Chianti myself (again, not available anymore), but if it's anything like other dry Italian whites, it would probably have paired well with fish.

Can someone explain? I didn't get the thing about wine?
@rubix41
@rubix41 3 жыл бұрын
It's not too much about the wine but the dish: sole, trout, plaice are delicate fish and it can be unpleasant to drink red wine with certain fish because red wine can give you an unpleasant taste if drinking with fish. White wine - something sparkling - usually doesn't affect the taste, it also helps to know if the fish is off (seafood gone off can give you food poisoning) since red wine distorts the taste. Red's cover and Bond's "gentleman" lifestyle BOTH know the rule of thumb, especially in a foreign country, that you drink white not red as a rule of thumb with fish.

The basic rule was white wines with white meats, red wines with red meats. That Grant breaks his rule, plus his constant overuse of even then archaic upper-class terms like "old boy", gives away to Bond that he is a Russian spy. Grant basically does a "How do you do, fellow posh Englishman" on himself. (Bonus fact - in the books the fact that Grant uses a full-Windsor knot on his tie is another sign that he is trying too hard)
