Hello friends,
And welcome back to Swiftlessons for another lead guitar tutorial. Throughout my two decades as a guitarist, it has often been the simplest concepts that have made the biggest difference in my playing. One simple tip that changed everything was to always learn your licks in multiple positions. In this lesson, I’ll be showing you how to play one classic lick in different octaves and positions of the minor pentatonic scale. Let’s get started!

He is really a great teacher. I watched his learning scales lesson, and it too was fantastic. He explains things, in a: slow, clear, easy-to-digest approach. I subscribed.

Dude, I'm blown away by how helpful your lessons are. I've used so many different guitar tutorial channels over the years and just found yours recently. Wish I would've known about you when you started posting vids. Your teaching style is so easy to follow and there's a methodology to it that makes sense. Plus the audio and video quality are top-notch, makes it feel like a professional lesson. Thanks!

Hey, Rob! I've always thought learning licks in different positions was a good idea, too! That's why I've always done it. Glad to hear that from a pro like you! I love your outro music, BTW, awesome guitar!

Useful thanks. I've just about memorised all 5 pentatonic shapes (caged system) but I might just concentrate on these three for now as it can be difficult to remember whilst noodling. Also this has made me realise I need to make up some riffs and record them so I've got something more to work with.

A great example of using the minor pentatonic scales with extension for soloing is the solo on the Past Masters version of Let It Be. George Harrison uses this stuff exactly. Why don't you do a lesson on that? :D (on a side note, the Past Masters solo is way better than the one in the official version).

I completely agree with you - George's 'Let It Be' solos are excellent examples of this. Just a small note, in terms of accuracy: there were actually (when originally issued) two 'official' versions of the 'Let It Be' solo - one was on the single (45), and the other was the one on the 'Let It Be' album.

sounds great.... I have to say that without being a student of music...just wanting to learn some licks....terminology such as resolve..upper extension..lower extension...root note....common position...stacking..running scale...going up a full step.... ....man love how it sounds...totally cannot follow the spoken instructions.....even shoving the fret board to save a few words for us visuals....might be helpful...

It sure does. This process has expanded my vocabulary across the fretboard, made me much more well rounded and improved my general understanding of the fretboard and how to achieve sounds in a wide variety of musical scenarios. The development of those skills can be applied to virtually everything in music.
