One Handed or Two Handed EPs? (Answer: Peel and Pull!)

I had a PC in tow and used the one handed method since that was taught and that's what I practiced. I didn't think about the peel pull action on the reserve handle because I didn't practice it and it took some serious force to dislodge it. It was a good learning experience which I'll keep in mind for the next one - be aware of which reserve handle you have and how it affects EPs!

I've been teached to do it with both hands on each side and now I understand it even more clearly why.

So I've heard from very experienced canopy pilots with high wing loadings that they've switched to two handed. The reason being, the handles were harder to pull and finding the location with the chest strap loosened.

We teach the one-handed method at my dropzone, and that's the method I've used for my 4 cutaways.

I completed my AFF 4 months ago (6 jumps left for B licence now), and I was taught 1-handed. Look, grab, look, grab, peel, pull, pull

Be aware you'll need to peel the reserve if it's a pillow. I know from experience it's much harder to manage without the peel first !

@@Auzastas yep! When I wrote this comment I was still using rentals with a metal D ring, but now that I have 2 pillows I have the added peel to my routine. Blue skys

Just listened to a episode of the Send It podcast where the host s* all over the two hands on handle method… I didn’t like his arguments, but I still like the one handed method better from, an aesthetic point of view. I’m joking. This was an excellent video, and I would love to see some hard data.

I would not listen to him, he’s a terrible resource on just about anything skydiving. And unfortunately he’s also passed away.

@@shadeland I’m sorry to hear he is no longer with us. I just started listening to the podcast today, and his style raised a lot of red flags, but I still found some interesting content. Skydiving is absolutely fascinating to me, but it is very hard to get into the culture if you do live near a DZ, so your channel is very much appreciated. Thank you.

@@Jump-n-smash He was a cautionary tale on having the right knowledge to give. One of the things in skydiving that it helps to learn is figuring out who to listen to and who to ignore. There are always going to be disagreements, but when someone is so wrong on so many things, and double down on it.. it's someone you probably shouldn't listen to. I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but we're talking about safety related things I have to bring up his deficiencies.
