Nintendo's mid-April Switch system update allowed for full system level remapping of buttons and sticks on the console. That's a great step forward, and makes a lot of games more playable, but there's one area of switch games you can't remap yet.

Love the format for this series, love that someone I respect is talking about accessibility, and I absolutely love that leather jacket

This was an interesting video! I had to get a friend to make me what he refers to as a "lazy controller". I have a movement disorder that causes me to shake all the time, so the duelshock I use is made to ignore a second button press of it happens in quick succession. So if I accidentally spazz out and hit the jump button twice in a precise platformer, the first will register and ignore the second. We need more controllers like that, and more videos like this!

Sounds like something that could/should be a software setting in a lot of games - good suggestion! Side note: "spazz" (and "spastic"/"spakker" etc) are considered to be really ableist and offensive in the UK much more so than they are in the US and other places - it's considered to be as offensive as racial slurs over here. That's just something to keep in mind if you're on the internet and UK folks are reading/listening.

@@nottoday9182 Would also like to add that here in Australia it has an offensive history here as well, and still has really negative connotations for disabled people here. I'm not someone directly effected by it but having a sibling with cerebral palsy I've heard stories of it going from an acceptable proper term for certain disabilities to becoming a slur. A lot of people even here don't fully understand the history of the word though.

It's tricky really, the majority of games do have them now, but they've often not on by default, and where you have to look to find them varies pretty much from game to game. Generally once you find that out you're a cutscene deep at least.

Really looking forward to this series! Would be nice if you could automatically link certain remaps to certain games too, to make hopping from game to game with different remaps more streamlined - or at least letting the user rename different remaps since I can imagine that if you have five different setups only known as numbers it would get confusing pretty quick. This is really important and I hope devs watch it and start thinking about what little things they can do to make their games more accessible and their players happier.

It is great that it is included with the standard controller, and one would hope that Microsoft and Sony would include this functionality on their systems. In the case of the XBONE the Elite Series II controller allows to map one of your buttons as a "shift" to change the function of any button. The answer is not in different and expensive hardware of course, but it also solves part of the puzzle! Great video!

Since I use games as chronic pain therapy (basically get focused on the game and not notice the pain) it's a big deal to have as many options open to me that hit the right notes for this to work. Sometimes the pain can be so bad in one hand and the rest of my body) my only option is turned based. Having the option to use a controller in just 1 hand opens more doors and options.

The other issue is it will not let you remap the analog fully. For example if you want to control the camera like you do in Super Mario 64 the "standard" camera settings are opposites of what SM64 is. And I'm breath of the wild if you decide to invert your controller on the option menu it also inverts the motion. Why do you want to invert the motion controllers when the motion control is supposed to emulate real life as opposed to being backwards of reality?

I know VR really isn't your thing, but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on accessibility in those games. My mom has next to no fine motor control in her left hand, so she finds a lot of those games really challenging to, but she really enjoys things like BeatSaber. I know VR is really a different beast entirely considering there's a lot of games that, while you can play while seated, pretty much offer 30% of the experience when doing so.

A bit off topic, but... Touchscreen compatibility? I hate how the Nintendo basically writes whether or not a game has touchscreen compatibility in the smallest print at the bottom of the listing, as if it's a shameful thing. Also, there's plenty of games that could have compatibility, but it's not implemented. Why?!
