It's a masterpiece. Took me a few years to finish, after starting and stopping many times.

Nope. Not a masterpiece. Just a thing that everybody calls a masterpiece. Put down the Kool-Aid.

@@BoundaryElephant how is it Kool aid if I thought it was great on my own? Sounds like you want people to drink YOUR Kool aid.

I’ve reed this beautiful book so many times… no Mather which book I encounter, classical or not, everytime I remember the last paragraph of Garcia’s book I always feel the need of crying.

Currently reading, just finished CH1, feeling intrigued and a bit confused in the details. However, when you take a step back, everything falls into place. The references align, and the bigger picture is beautifully painted.

Magical realism it's just the product of a Latinoamerican worldview. It's exaggerated but representative. No floating priests but for example when people in Argentina heard that the guy who stole Eva Peron's body said that when he fell asleep for a while he woke up to his truck surrounded by flowers, they just went meh, so what else is new?

I read this book several years ago and though I didn't know beans about Columbian history, I loved it. That said, I agree very much with this review. It's unlike any other book I've ever read, and I had to make a copy of the family tree to make little notes regarding who was who. That helped tremenously and I really enjoyed the story. Though I think I have run across copycat magical realism in perhaps other popular culture, this was my first real exposure to it in such an original form, and I have to say I was completely charmed by it. For me, the realism part of the term is how Marquez slips it in here and there and makes it all so natural and blended into reality. When I was done I read it echoed with historical events, but I did not pursue those at the time. What brings me back to this book is a radio documentary I heard recently about Minor C. Keith and the United Fuit Company. I cannot remember everything in the story and I think I want to enjoy reading it again.

Thank you for your comment. I would also like to revisit this book at later stage. I belive it is the kind of book that likely gets better the more you read it

Good video. By the way, the correct pronunciation is MARQuez. In Spanish, if there's a 'tilde' above a letter, you put emphasis on that. Márquez.

Thank you for providing review of this book that is anything except endlessly flowing unjustified praise for the second coming of Christ in the form of Marquez. You are exactly right to compare this book to Catch-22.

I am wondering whether to pick this up. I like post modernist books normally but magical realism is not really my thing. The reviews are very positive however....

You must. But you have to forget about being rational or logical and you have to be ready to embrase a culture where magical is a part of everyday life.
