Played this song for Bernadine a few months before she passed away. It was 💯 % sincere and she knew it - When it's meant to be, you know it for life.

"And life showed compassion". What a great line for a great song. Over 40 years later, I still melt when I see Larry perform this song.

When someone told me back in the day it was him my reaction "The worlds greatest funk bass player can sing too?" Naw, perhaps you mistaken Al Wilson." Larrys voice melt many hearts with this song. 😀

What an awesome song and such a great voice! My wife and I had some friends sing this at our wedding. That was in 1982 and still one in a million.

Larry Graham's mother Dell Graham was the best she was one in a million. So grateful I got to work with her. I have never heard anyone do route 66 like her. Larry, Bobby Fremont and Sly were truly blessed by learning from such a beautiful woman. Rest in Peace and Love Ms. Dell

Heard about her incredible talent when I lived in the Bay area. They said she would pack them in at a piano bar to hear her perform.

I used to play this on the school bus every morning on the way your school back in the day. It was number one with us kids. That was a time when we bought old people records also. Lol

Yes! I wasn't really into slow songs back then - was way into funk at the time, and I remember hearing this for the first time in the car with my mom and thinking it was boring at the beginning. But by the end of the song, I was like, "That's kinda good." Couple days later, I was singing the song into my hairbrush. 😄

Probably one of the top wedding songs in pop music. Larry has the goods.

This song dominated 79 80 Heavy.. Mr Graham gradually evolved from Heavy Funk/Rock into ballads. If you listen to early Sly and The Family Stone..he was cold on those few ballads they recorded. Incredible range.
