I personally love so much the Coles 4038 for his particular warm, rounded and full sound recording the brass instrumenst, but the Royer 122 is also fantastic.

Thanks Andrea 😊 (big fan of your work btw!) Ideally one would have a few options, as in reality, all recording jobs are different - just building up the equipment locker as we go. Coles certainly wins the warm/round battle

@@JRod37 thank you! Compliments for your video. Not all musicians know about how much the ribbon microphones work well for the brass instruments, so it's important to make videos and share informations about it. Your video is excellent. 👍👍👍

Royer sounded the nicest to me, being the most 'open' sounding without too much brightness. Great video mate!

The Royer always surprises me! If you solo the instruments, it's not too pretty (at least on me) - but sits really nicely in the mix

Exactly the type of shootout I was looking for. Thanks for a great video!

I liked the shure one, probably the expensive preamp helping a lot, sounds most alive and tight to me

Honestly it's probably what I use the most unless I'm going for a certain character

I just watched a video where the host stated that a Coles4038 ribbon mic should not be used for brass instruments. I immediately recalled pictures of various saxophonists playing in front of a Coles 4038. I think there is enough proof that a Coles 4038 would make an excellent mic option for some saxophonist’s home studio.

It's definitely the mic that's most often used for studio sessions I've done. There's truth to the mics being delicate and sensitive to air pressure/wind, which I guess could get people worried about using them for brass, but that's about it... Coles on sax is gorgeous (though probably not bright enough for some)
