I saw the show on Friday, and it lived up to the hype. Brill as the sad man under the blanket was a highlight, but it really was an ensemble effort. My only complaint as a regular theatergoer was spending Acts One and Two (of four) wondering where the story was headed. The sameness of dramatic action as characters were slowly fleshed out made me a bit impatient, but the last 20 minutes of the show brought it all home. To the show's great credit, the sameness I noted isn't a complaint about repetitiveness, there's enough variation to keep it fresh and (frankly, slowly) moving. The best sequences in the show were the (staged) moments of improvisation in the recording booth--they absolutely came across as natural and unrehearsed.

With the buzz this is getting right now, i will not be shocked to see it win best new play. Heck, with all the middling reviews for the scores for musicals this year, i wont be shocked if this was a player in score

Predicting this to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama as well as Best Play at the Tonys which, to me, is a lock because Appropriate’s considered a revival.

This was by far my favorite new score of the season. If there were a Best Ensemble award, this show would take it. Stereophonic and Appropriate were the best plays I’ve seen this season.

Is this like Daisy Jones and the Six? And with all the music - how is this not a "musical"? I got a ticket to see it in July, so looking forward to it, but I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to see.

There is only one complete song. The rest of the time, it’s riffing or parts of songs.

I haven’t watched Daisy Jones and the Six or read the book, but based on what I saw in the trailer for it, there are definitely similarities as both works are inspired by Fleetwood Mac to some degree. Stereophonic is a play with music. The entire show is set in a sound studio where they are working on an album and, as the other commenter here notes, only one of the songs is ever performed in its completed form. All the songs are diegetic, not too dissimilar than say how some jukebox musicals are, but the songs aren’t performed with any intent of entertaining the audience. They are works in progress and intended to show the artistic process of the characters, not to be performance pieces like it would be in a musical. I get it, it’s a fine line.
