Saw it today-loved it! James Monroe Iglehart truly sounded like Louis Armstrong, and it sounded like he was actually playing the trumpet. He was phenomenal. The entire cast is stellar-especially the 4 wives (those women can SING!)-but the choreography and the dancers’ execution of it blew me away. I bopped my head and tapped my toes on almost every song; the orchestra and arrangements were wonderful. No, it didn’t cover every aspect of Armstrong’s life, but that would have been impossible in 2.5 hours. (Someone makes this complaint about every bio-musical which is silly-it’s a musical, not a 500-page biography.) For me, this was a classic American musical: beautiful costumes and sets, great performances, intricate dance numbers, and great songs you’ll be humming for the next week. I’m already planing to see it again with my teenage sons in tow! ❤️

I caught the show last month with Louis' alternate performer. Very good & solid performance, but i had the same quibble about playing the instruments. Three of the four wives were fantastic-- the other was "just" excellent (material didn't let her shine the same way). Loved the designs & choreo. I felt a bit let down by the song choices -- oddly -- too many & too short. I think this could have benefitted from a little more work out of town to figure out the story they were trying to tell. Imperfect, but enjoyable.

I enjoyed the music, but definitely it didn’t wow me.

Same. I'm glad I saw it, but don't need to see it again. James Monroe Iglehart was amazing, but I also had the thought that his voice is taking a lot of abuse to replicate Armstrong's.

It had good moments but found it to be quite a slog
