One Minute Bunkai: [www.oneminutebunkai.com]
Juji uke (X block) has many bunkai (applications), this example shows an elusive but very effective bunkai. In most examples it is shown catching a punch or a downward attack to the head. Here it is used as a direct attack since the body shift (tai sabaki) takes care of the punch, the hands meet similarly like in kata but you are catching your attackers eardrums with your hands cupped. In the next move your hands thrust down in the X-hands position to attack the radial nerve at mid-arm just below the bicep (use the shuto edge of both hands), this will quickly bring his head straight down where you literally bat it straight back with your elbow like a baseball (do not let go of his arm when you elbow, maintain your frame and stick to him). Of course we always like to show a thorough follow up just to give you ideas with a takedown when possible-- but honestly, it will be all over with the first move once those eardrums pop, do not worry about the follow-ups, always focus on each and every move so it is done with its natural intent and purpose, they will never let you down. And please don't get fancy with this stuff, keep it simple, simple WORKS!

Still "ritualized" (which makes it "good-looking" and "clean"), but uke attacks from a realistic distance and the applications are simple and effective. I wish all bunkai vids on yt were like this! Very much appreciated! Thanks a lot!

@Oneminutebunkai I'm very grateful with you an all people that are publishing videos like this, because you are teaching great things for all levels of practitoners and maybe rescuing some old practitioners from abandon martial arts because they get bored or as in my case, I want to have new material for my nephews that are learning from me and who knows maybe this knowledge can save their lives someday. Thanks for this videos and greetings from Mexico.

Dear Antonio, I have one video about Gedan barai in its literal use against a kick. What is always important is the follow up because blocking a kick does not always end it, unless you break or severely damage the kickers ankle. But you are right in that there are many interpretations, and the one to strip your hands from a grip is very useful and practical. Thank you for your remarks.

Osu! Well-said. I've met Sensei Saavedra once - a great teacher and a great karateka - and I've met several Sansei students and black belts at competitions here in NYC. Thank you for this wonderful resource you provide to us through this site.

Dear guyver2095, So many of us have gotten bored doing the same boring kihon at some point or another. It is this kind of stuff that makes our Karate come to life. It has always supposed to have been this way. Make it come to life for you and your students it is up to you and me (our generation). We cannot let it go to waste! GIve yourself permission to break all the molds and allow your imagination to explore!

I believe, the sidestep is integral part of the blocking action, and you don't have to move so far, since punches and kicks have a very slight chance of redirection once triggered, you don't have to move far away, depending your intentions, so once unbalanced the enemy is "locked" in position because the structure of the way he is forced to stand keeps the attacker unable to move or he can fall to ground.

@Oneminutebunkai Thanks, I am a TKD practitioner since some time ago. When I was a beginner, me and my friends were starting doing poomsae (palgwe forms) and we find "oddities" and inconsistencies that nobody can explain to us so, we have to refer to Karate Katas to find out, in Time Palgwe was replaced with "Modern" Taeguk forms to add some more confusing things so, finally we end here. Tae kwon do have something like bunkai, but only Corean masters seems to know it.

@SonataOfPeace Side stepping is not just theoretical, it is the main course for many established martial arts, BUT you make a great point. I teach that in close quarters an attack will come with no time to shift or move, thus you MUST stand your ground and defend against it. But this requires a solid constitution and a strong fighting character behind your eyes. These examples here are middle range, I will have some examples of close range later on. Thanks for bringing this up.

@guyver2095 Good points, I would like to add that these bunkai are for dealing with "committed" attacks, not feints or half hearted punches-you deal with that stuff differently. I will cover in some other examples how to deal with them "head on" so that you forcefully intercept the attack and not just let it go past you.

It can be done. And I will do a 1MB about it. I know what you mean that when you Xblock your face and upper body is vulnerable to attack, but one of the ways it was meant to be used you are actually punching the inside of the opponents kicking leg and it is extremely punishing and painful (as all these things should be).

I am an alumni of the Sansei Goju Karate Assoc from the late 70s to mid 80s (man I sound old). Manny Saavedra is my Sensei and I stay in touch with him. I remember Empi-Ha well, itwas probably Maestro Urban's best legacy. But hey a Juji-Uke is universal to all styles because Karate is like music, a language of humanity.

@Oneminutebunkai As "Sonata of peace" user wrote, some people believe that blocking is only raise your hands and what you depicted here is step after step after step doing, some movements are a unity and others are different stages. It take years of practice to do in such a way that you could make them with the appropriate speed and power, so you must very diligent with the practice of this.

Nope. The circle is still there, only smaller. If you'll notice in the application, tori actually uses a circle that is bigger than the kihon, yet smaller than demonstrated in kata. Kata are cliff-notes, not dissertations. -You- must bridge the gap. That's the artist part.

I always knew there was more to kihon, I am very interested in your interpretation of the Gedan Barai. Instinctively in a self defense seminar, when my hand was grabbed I performed a Gedan Barai or downward block hammering the writ of my opponents hand ^^

@Oneminutebunkai Yes I agree, but in all fields always there must be researchers and pioneers. You know, this knowledge is very important, because it doesn't matter if you do it perfectly the important is to have the idea and the state of mind to do it when you need it. My point is that have more knowledge can save your life, no matter what, and fot those who don't agree and believe that Street fighting is better because you have more freedom of choice and less boundaries,

What you are doing is excellent, to go back to the roots of the art. However, we need to acknowledge that the kata practice nowadays is a water down version of the original 唐手 (tang shou, karate from Okinawa, hence why kata and application don't match. This is the same problem with Chinese arts. Keep it up as this is an excellent project.

The bunkai applications are certainly very effective and creative and I do not doubt their functionality. However, I wonder about your thoughts on how you portrayed them. For example, side-stepping an attack is theoretically possible, but it's always much different in a live, fast, furious, and dangerous environmental situation where sometimes you cannot anticipate such attacks quick enough.

@Oneminutebunkai Many masters don't teach their students their "secrets"because they don't trust them or don't know how t. The reality is that you have to practice many years so you can execute this bunkai teachings before you can use them in real life, and in that process a master can get to know their students so he can decide if its worthy or not to teach this things.

Dear guyver2095, You are not alone, lots of people look elsewhere to find answers. The old chinese systems are most complete when it comes to retaining the fighting applications. Outside of China it is hit and miss according the ryu or dojo. I have always cross-trained and researched extensively to see what's out there. And this whole thing about masters knowing stuff and not teaching to their students usually means they don't know jack, it is a cop-out, don't believe them they are insincere.

So in the kata you step back, you rear arm makes a big circular motion before the X block, but in the application you step to tge side and no big arm cicular motion. In essence your kata practice is teaching the wrong way to move and then you want to apply it for real... Does anyone see the problem here?
@Oneminutebunkai
@Oneminutebunkai 11 жыл бұрын
You have sharp eyes grasshopper. Yes it is different, this is not the standard bunkai you see everyone else do. You have not realized I am trying to offer different ideas, alternate points of view, otherwise I would not bother with this project. The big circular moves are just for kata in one particular style (no one is there), no need to apply them in real life, they are interpreted once you have an opponent. Sorry to disappoint you.

@Oneminutebunkai Así se habla! as we say in México, we have to be creative, look for innovations and earch in the roots of the martial art at the same time, I'm looking for some info about the alignment between you and your opponent now, see you soon and thanks. I'm going to look forward for your videos, they are great. Cheers from México, God bless you.

In some cases the bunkai is identical to the move in kata, in some cases it is not. If If you are a "literalist" or a "what if-er" you will hinder your ability understand that what is important is the principles you need to master, becasue there are many way to apply one posture of any given kata.

Dear guyver2095, I would bet the majority simply DON'T KNOW. They could be awesome fighters but this stuff called Bunkai is not intuitive. Bunkai is making a revival now because people are figuring out on their own. Very little of what I do here was taught to me.

I have doubts against a front kick (Mae Geri). I see many bunkai doing this form, a block against front kick. Actually is this? Because is hard you perform a X block maybe against a fast kick. I can be wrong, but it is difficult. In effect, I know that in Kata the techniques can mean many things, but there is other bunkai about the gedan juji uke? Thank you very much for an answer!
