They don’t hibernate so don’t put them in the fridge! However, they will slow down during colder months like many of the ant species that live in the area of Mexicanus. You want to heat them at around 29.4 C or 85 F and want to leave them undisturbed especially when the colony is young. Random queen deaths are also fairly common with Myrmecocystus, but if your colony makes it past 25 workers then I would say they are in the safe zone 👍. Small fruit flies are usually the go to food for these ants.

They love to hunt fruit flies, but just feed them whatever insect, and they'll probably like it. I feed mine mealworms just about once every 5 days. My colony is about 25 workers. Also, make sure to give them access to sugars at least every 3 days, even in smaller colonies

Looks like they are slowing down for diapause, the heat must of been low enough for it to initiate, the queen atm is being used as a replete just make sure she doesn't get too fat because it can cause issues with egg laying.

@@EstheticAnts I also have a question for you EA. Would North American lasius neoniger work as a host species for European lasius umbratus?

Beginner mistakes at your experience EA? 😅 America gets winters, its winter there now, America even gets very cold winters, so yes they do have a diapause Queen also still looks a bit too heavy

I'm still a beginner. But a lot of folks said they don't hibernate.

@@EstheticAnts they don't hibernate, they have diapause. It's like a slight hibernation. They will just slow down noticeably, if heat is low enough.

@@EstheticAnts a lot of folk say that about a lot of species, but if you look at where the species is native from- it gets really cold in all places they are from during winter
