Not only did this outcome bring the AFC Championship to Indy, but the Chargers had our number at the time (and would in fact eliminate the Colts the next two seasons) and L.T. would've been extremely tough for a Colts run defense that had struggled prior to the playoffs, especially in SD.

Then SD fired Marty the following day, after going 14-2. The loss sucked, but that was one of the worst ownership decisions ever. Though they made it to the AFC game a year later, things might have been different had they kept Schottenheimer.
@KMC52406 жыл бұрын
He's so underrated as a head coach. My Redskins fucked him over as well. In 2001 which was Martys first year as Redskins head coach, they started 0-5 and were without question the worst team in the league. But he got the guys playing, and they finished strong at 8-8. A disappointing season overall sure, but they showed signs that they were trending in the right direction. Then Dan Snyder got involved when he shouldn't have, and wanted to split Martys role. He wanted him to be just the head coach, instead of having him continue on as both head coach and GM. Synder gave Marty both of those roles when he convinced him to join the Redskins.
@claudeabraham23475 жыл бұрын
SD fired Marty, but not until 13th February. Spanos, owner of Chargers, was furious at Marty for losing this game. He waited until after all teams with vacancies hired coaches, then fired Marty on 13th Feb, ensuring that no jobs are available, as all were filled by then. Spanos was a dirty, rotten, petty, & vindictive scumbag for doing that. What have the Chargers done since? Losing to Belichick & Brady is not reason to fire a coach. Many head coaches & assistants have lost jobs due to B & B beating them.

I agree that Marty was great coach but his poor decision making all by itself was enough to cause the Chargers to lose this game. He had them go for it on 4th and 11 on their own 30 yard line in the first quarter when they could have kicked a 48 yard field goal. Then he used a challenge flag in the 4th quarter after McCree was stripped by Troy Brown and it was clearly before he was tackled. A few minutes later they are out of time outs and in need of a field goal to tie the game so they spike the ball and kick a 54 yarder and miss, ending the game. Those two decisions if not made by him are more than likely a 6 point swing in the Chargers' favor, which would have resulted in them playing Indi the week after, a team that they consistently beat during this era. I love Marty but his decision making in that game is something that I will never forget.

We basically had the Pats beat, and the game shouldn't have been left to Kaeding who became a choke artist in the playoffs. To this day I'm not sure what Marlon was thinking, he should've fell to the ground. He didn't need to make an extra play. It was a great game and a great year. After Schottenheimer’s passing yesterday, thought I’d watch this game that I’m grateful was posted. Didn’t realize the how many mental mistakes the Chargers made that day. Two dropped sure fire INTs. A costly unsportsmanlike penalty which on a DB which gave the Pats a 1st down. The Rivers fumbles. And inability for the WR’s to catch crucial throws. Jackson’s lack of mindfulness to drag both feet in the endzone. And, of course, the infamous INT and fumble and Kaeding blowing his second consecutive playoff FG. Just wasn’t meant to be despite having a hell of a roster. For Rivers and Gates, there’ll be no SB, but both will join LT in the HOF and be immortalized. And hopefully Schottenheimer too!

2006 is a sore spot for Patriot fans too. It's widely considered a "Missing Ring" season. The 2006 Patriots were arguably one of the best Patriots teams ever. '06 was the first Brady era team with a high powered offense combined with an elite defense. Patriots were leading 21-6 at the half vs the Colts and 38-34 with 3:49 to go in the 4th. IMO they would've steam rolled the Bears in the Super Bowl (Rex Grossman lol). 2006 was obviously a season before they went 16-0. 2006 and 2007 very easily could've been back to back Super Bowls and 5 out of 7 since 2001. @TheLocalLt6 жыл бұрын
Ian Clancy huh? It’s considered a missing ring because of the AFC Championship but not because this 06 team was good, this was one of the Patriots weakest teams. The defense was very elite, but the offense had very few weapons. Benjamin Watson and Daniel Graham were easily their best receivers, followed by a 38 year old Troy Brown… if you want the first high-powered offensively Patriots team, you look at 2004. An absolute monster of an offense combining Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk, who combined for over 2000 rush yds, with Brady’s newly refined deep passing game featuring David Givens and David Patten, and of course the Patriots usual bread and butter underneath junk to Deion Branch and Troy Brown. They also had the same defense that was #1 in 2003, when the Pats had won games 12-9 and 9-0. The defense was nearly as good in 2004, finishing at #2 behind the Steelers (despite missing Ty Law and their CB2 Ty Poole almost the whole season). But the Patriots offense blasted the Steelers #1 defense in the AFC Championship in a revenge game from Halloween as Big Ben lost for the first time as a pro in a 41-27 mugging at Heinz field. And as for the Colts #1 offense, well the Pats D held it to 3 points in the divisional round. And of course they went on to win the Super Bowl, completing the last back to back in the NFL, but in very different style from their 2003 title. I might even take the 2004 team to beat the 2007 team, given the fact that the defense was younger plus the Patriots played their best football in 04 at the end of the year instead of at the beginning like in 07. The 04 team could easily have gone 16-0 had Corey Dillon been healthy in Pittsburgh the first time (I doubt they have that let down loss vs Miami right after clinching the division if they are 13-0 going in, having beaten Pittsburgh). They mauled two great teams in the playoffs, and played one of their worst games of the year in the super bowl and still won.

Marty Schottenheimer, Philip Rivers, Ladainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, Shawne Merriman, Nate Kaeding, and Marlon McCree, your 2006 San Diego Chargers no longer have the biggest choke in team history. That honor belongs to Brandon Staley, Justin Herbert, and the 2022 Los Angeles Chargers blowing a 27-0 lead and lost 31-30 in regulation to the Jacksonville Jaguars. And that's despite having a +5 turnover margin and converting six more third downs.
@nobodysperfect06 Жыл бұрын
I think plenty people still consider the 2006 chargers team a bigger waste of talent than that other charger team because that charger team was a Super Bowl caliber type team in terms of talent

The time management on the final drive was so bad. They took like 15 seconds getting set when they could’ve just spiked it. All for a 4 yard gain that made the clock keep going some more 🤦🏻♂️
@willd.80406 жыл бұрын
G Gutierrez Yup. And they even had a receiver go from the left slot to the right slot on that play, which wastes another 6-7 secs at least. Terrible clock management
@projekt6796 жыл бұрын
It was really weird. Marty is no idiot and he’s usually in control of everything. I still wonder what went wrong.
@MrTcavanaugh15 жыл бұрын
Projekt 6 they had an inexperienced QB who was effectively in his first season. If the GM hadn’t drafted Eli Manning when it was clear that they already had a good QB then Drew Brees would have been the QB in this game and they would have had a guy with more experience executing in big games.
@MrTcavanaugh15 жыл бұрын
Projekt 6 and further from that Marty has a proven track record for not being able to coach a team to win big games and it was the case in this game as well. Going for it on 4th and 11 on the 30 yard line in the 1st quarter with the game tied and then using a challenge flag when it was obvious that McCree had fumbled the ball cost the Chargers multiple chances to kick high % field goals in this game
@davewielhouwer115 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing . Rivers wouldve been better off throwing it away and stopping the clock. With 8 seconds left they should have run 1 more play. A shot downfield or a quick sideline play. A 54 yarder has maybe a 2/5 chance. Bad clock management

You've got a player for the Chargers who said - straight up in the press conference after the game - that it was more important for him to try to score a touchdown on a pass that he intercepted ON FOURTH DOWN and then fumbled back to New England - than it was for him to help his team win the game and get to the Super Bowl. With guys like that on the roster, no wonder San Diego lost. That this mentality was allowed to exist is not just on the players, it's on Marty Schottenheimer himself.

Everyone wants to blame McCree and I get that he should've gone straight down, but LT touched the ball less than 10 times in the 2nd half. The league MVP had less than 10 touches for an entire half. The lack of touches to me was a bigger factor than that play by McCree.
@sramoore00751876 жыл бұрын
Ya but that hit he took after the catch and run had him kind of messed up. I think that's y he had less touches.
@maniacmasturbator24116 жыл бұрын
KMC McCree gets too much flack for this. While it’s true that the chargers most likely would have won if he immediately went to the ground like Marty said before the game, there was 6 and a half minutes left. It wasn’t like McCree was running for a long time or dodging a ton of Patriots trying to make a crazy play. He intercepted it and ran for about 3 yards and then was stripped. Morgan Burnett picked off that Russell Wilson pass with less time left, more room to potentially run, a 12 point lead, and GB still lost. It was just a very unusual play and a great strip by Troy Brown. More of a great play by brown than a screw up by McCree.

I blame Rivers more than I blame mccree. Rivers struggles against belicheck everytime we play them. Rivers will put an end to that Sunday. ⚡
@KMC52406 жыл бұрын
@@derrickmcgrath889 We shall see. Rivers has never beaten Tom Brady in his career. Rivers did beat the Patriots in 2008, but that was when Brady was hurt and Matt Cassel was under center. I'd say this current Brady-led Patriots team, with how they've looked at times this year, is the most beatable team since the 2006 team. So this could be his chance.
@Danny760side6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to say but the 06 Squad was not disciplined catching a ball with one minute left and letting the clock go down to 40 seconds then that stupid penalty on the defense they had plenty of chances to seal the game
