Disclaimer: I am neither a fan nor a member of Isha The answer is three part (I am not going to dwell on the subject, you will have to do your own homework on what I am referring to) : Upasana is the ultimate destination of yoga. Shiva is the Adipati of Upasana krama. Hence the connotation of Adiyogi. He is the definition, path and destination of yoga. Vigraha Upasana is one of the highest forms yoga and most difficult. It is easier (to say very loosely) to perform a temporary avahana, or at least presume one has ritualistically. It requires immense sadhana to be able to make an avahana that is for an extended period of time of the physical representation of an astral deva. It also requires an extreme level of upasana of several devotees and continuously to keep the energy residing within the vigraha. This is especially true in the case there is no external assistance in creating in the vigraha (like Vishwakarma, an enlightened being's tapas, physical liberation of the deity etc.) Those engaging in Upasana will know what I am saying, others will just have to make do with what is said. Sadguru is a transient Upasaka who has through either divine guidance or divine will (notice there is no attribution to self in both choices) decided to embark on a journey of Antharyami yoga. The goal of this format is not only to self enlighten but to add more strength to his Upasana by taking more people on that path successfully, this the role of Acharya (highest level for a guru). The more that participate in this Upasana of his the more stronger his device (Adiyogi) the further the spiritual journey. He is the first of many of today's Gurus to acknowledge he is not the ultimate, he is not the one to be worshipped, neither is he a representation of the omnipresent nor all powerful or given himself a special position. He is not a guru that merely teaches or displays you what he knows. He is a guru that partakes in the journey with his disciple(s). The true kind our lands have benefitted from since time immemorial.
