I too miss GT1 a lot but there are many modern GT classes that are pretty close to GT1 as well. The GTO class in the GT Cup Championship is a fine example of such a class. The SXP class where the SCG 004 fights for victory in the Nurburgring series is another one. The GTX class in the Hankook 24h Series is a class that literally gave us a hypercar. The Vortex 2.0 was literally made for this class. GTX can also be found in the ESET Cup Series where you can watch the Pagani Zonda GR racing.

GT1, the class which Porsche exploited twice with the Dauer 962 and 911 GT1. The latter of which led to other manufacturers producing pure bred race cars masquerading as GT1 road cars; Mercedes CLK-GTR/LM, Toyota GT One, Nissan R390.

Ah, the old 2000-2011 GT1 era. That GT-R GT1 from Sumo Power GT, JRM Racing and Swiss Racing Team will never get old. You'd expect it to have a V6 hollow bark but instead greeted by a growl and snarl from VK56DE V8 5.6-litre taken from Infiniti QX56. It was insane. Oh, and Marc VDS-liveried Matech Ford GT GT1, as well as Hexis Racing's Aston DBR9 GT1. I still maintain that Hexis Racing got some of the best livery ever to grace GT series grid. Fun fact: In 2010 Romain Grosjean did several races with Matech Racing in Ford GT GT1, along with Rahel Frey as well if my memory served me well. That included a run at Le Mans. Didn't go well.

that VK56DE would then go on to race for the next 12 years in Australia, it was developed into a 5.0 to meet regulations at the time around engines. The Nissan Altimas would race in Supercars till 2019 at which point they were moved to super2 and now have been moved to super 3. Had no idea it was a derivation of the GTR Gt1 engine until very recently

I always regret not appreciating how amazing GT1 was when I was watching, as I expected it to be around forever. Certainly my all time favorite class. I would try see them live as much as possible. The diversity of cars and the monstrous sounds. You’d have the scream of a V12 being contrasted by the ground shaking thunder of the Corvette V8. I miss it so much. As great and as GT3 is today, they seem to be pushed to limits thanks to technology. GT1 always seemed to holding back the sheer madness almost like caged animals.

As far as I can remember, FIA GT between 1999 and 2009 had 2 classes: GT and N-GT. GT was for the old GT2 cars: Vipers, Corvette C5, Porsche 993 turbo etc while the N-GT was for cars closer to their roadlegal versions: Porsche 996 GT3-R(S), Ferrari 360GTC and 430... GT was later renamed to GT1, N-GT became GT2. It is out of this latest GT2 spec where GTE/GTLM came from. Towards 2009, you only had 2 manufacturers running GT1: Corvette and Aston Martin. In the American series, you even only had 2 Corvettes racing, so they even modified their C6 cars to run in GT2 to get some kind of competition. I started going to the Spa 24h since 2003 (the one with the 16h of rain which was won by a slower class N-GT Freisinger Porsche GT3-R) and the 2003 to 2008 races were for me the best. Big fields, quirky cars entering like the Gillet Vertigo, privateer Corvette C5-R of Selleslagh, the BMW E46 M3 GTR in the national class, even the Lotus Elise entered by the local car mechanic school...

GT1 reminds me of the good old days. I got my first Logitech Wheel at 14 and raced GTR2 for hours. Years prior my dad took me to the german round in Oschersleben and 8 year old me was hooked. We went every year the series visited and I watched the races on Eurosport. The LG Superracing Weekend will always be special to me. The C6 Corvette was my favorite, never heard such a sound. The stands were shaking. Also the paddock was easily accessible and the driver very friendly and always up for a quick chat at the signing sessions.

I remembered GT1 very fondly. Around 2006, Mum and Dad had got Sky, and they had GT racing on multiple channels such as Eurosport, Sky Sports 3 and Motors TV. There were Maserati MC12's, Lamborghini Murchelargo's, Saleen S7's, Aston Martin DB9's, Ford GT's and the Calaway Corvette's. With the Ferrari 430's and Porsche 911's the lower cartogories. So many different cars with different shapes, sizes, and engine noises. It was great.

That early 2000's era GTS/GT1 class was pretty good. ALMS typically had the top contenders, which were basically Pratt and Miller Corvette and a rotation of competitors such as Oreca (Viper), Conrad (Saleen), ProDrive (Ferrari), moar ProDrive (Aston Martin DBR). The Maserati was FIA legal but not ACO legal, so it never showed up at Le Mans. Freddy Lienhard (Lista) bought an MC-12 and entered it for a couple of ALMS races, but it was not technically classified with the other GT1's. I think the latter GT2/GTE fields were more impressive, but some great battles during that period.

If I recall, Mercedes actually did sell some CLK GTRs (Both Coupes and later Roadsters). Its the CLK LM from 1998 that didn't have any road cars sold despite having one road car. If you thought the shenanigans Porsche pulled themselves with that road car rule was dodgey, wait until you see what these three manufacturers did just as an example: - Toyota did build one Road car for 98 but then pulled the sneakiest sales job by pointing to the fuel tank and saying that technically if this were empty, you could fit the Suitcase in there (I wish I was joking about this). And that lone Road car that they didn't sell? Basically the race car but with a parts bin of stuff from other cars in the interior (Including parts that suspiciously looked barrowed from Lotus) - Nissan built a road car when they entered in 97 but somehow pulled off the laziest trick in that they reused said road car for 98 as well, the only difference being they put the updated tail on it and painted it blue as opposed to the red car from the previous year. Thats literally it. The still existing singular Road car is that very car (and much like its race car brethren, borrowed their headlights...from a Lamborghini Diablo) - Sintura (The team that bought the old Harrier chassis) basically showed off their singular GT1 entry as a Road car but didn't produce a single road car. So yeah, late 90s GT1 was an absolute mess (Even more so then the "Dauer" 962, which still blows my mind that they somehow made a road going 962 with a DVD player of all the things).

I had the pleasure of seeing a flock of 2000s GT1 cars at this years Goodwood 80th MM and I can confirm they are everything I hoped they would be. They all sounded completely different to one another; but they had one similarity in that they were all groundshakingly loud. They looked fantastic, my personal favourite being the 550 GTS Prodrive. You really did feel the spirit of Le Mans as they went around the circuit as night fell. While modern GT3 is respectable, it absolutely does not have the soul and adrenaline that GT1 did.

Loved GTR and GTR2 - online racing before it was given the coverage it gets now. So quirky, especially the lack of wheels on the GTR replays! League racing with those and GTL was great fun, and so customisable with custom car packs with ballast for balance. We even had effectively code 60 to start the races, as lag was more of an issue we did rolling starts using the pit limiter so there were very few start accidents.

I still remember my first encounter with a GT1 car like it was yesterday. It was the Knockhill round of the British GT championship in 2002, I was 10 at the time. I remember hearing an enormous V8 roar and looked up to see a car that looked a bit like a McLaren F1 leaving the pit lane onto the circuit. I never had seen or heard of the Saleen S7 before that day! There were 2 of them in the field and they both blew away every other car on the grid in that race! Incredible to watch. The following year the Mosler MT900R and Ultima GTR were amazing too, although not technically GT1 cars.

GT racing as a whole during that time was just brilliant with so much variety, it's what I grew up to, walking the paddocks during the mid 2000's looking at all the GT1 cars in particular, I remember being in the British GT paddock at donnington in 2003 and being asked if I wanted to sit in the Viper, giving away stacks of barely used race tyres, my mum questioning me what to do with them when I came back with a slick and wet on either shoulder 🤣, they became planters in the garden by the way. Was just such a good time, the variation of sounds and the sheer volume would just blow me away every time, 2004 I was in the paddock at Rockingham for British GT, one of the Ultima GTR's had been wheeled back to show the public it running close up, I stood right behind the centre exit exhaust and let 8t blow my ears to pieces(still working fine though now lol) as it would let of the throttle it would spit flames and I watched as they went around either sides of my legs 🤣 I miss those days so much 😭. I watched the FIA GT Championship and then followed into the GT1 Championship until 2012 when they basically ended up running a full field of GT3 cars...just like GT3 at the time 🤷 didn't get it and I didn't realise at the time that GT1 as I knew it was dead, however GT3 cars are about on par with the old GT1 now, don't quite have that same rawness to them but enjoyable to watch particularly trackside. As for GTR2, still have it, not played it for a year or two but got to be my favourite game of time I think, I'll always go back to it

I got my first proper job with a team running GT1, 2, 3, 4 and LMP cars in early 2011. The GT1 cars largely shared the same, heavily modified V12 engine with the outdated LMP (although by then the LMP was direct injection), while the GT3 used the same block with much less modifications. GT2 and GT4 used the same V8 block as each other too. Then GT1 very abruptly died at the end of the year, GT2 became GTE shortly after and immediately received a huge chunk of this team's investment (along with GT3, to attract a larger customer base) as the ambitious new LMP project also disintegrated. Oddly GT3 and GT4 kept their names though.

I loved GT racing in the 90s - the best-looking cars and just the concept of having 4 races going on in one race was awesome! I loved the sound of the Viper - it was definitely something special compared to the road-going version; then there were those interesting one-offs like the Mirage Countach and Vector M12. Definitely preferred watching it over F1 - in F1 the cars are too similar. GT racing was kind of like the continuation of the days where you'd have a Mini Cooper racing against a Mustang - two totally different cars with different strengths and weaknesses and drivers who were either suited to them or not. It does make me wonder: what would have resulted if they'd thrown a few rally tracks into the season and had some sort of points-based modification system where the less you have to change your car for a given track, the less points in the championship you sacrifice.

Nice coverage for my favorite racing series, though I wanted to clarify little bit of things -Clk gtr never raced in Lemans -Mercedes won 1997 and 1998 with clk gtr and the clk lm, but the 1999 car was a completely different prototype only car that wasn't related to clk gtr, it was called CLR -from 1999 to 2004 the two classes were called gt and ngt, then in 2005 the GT1 class made an official return and we had the top cars called GT1 again where Maserati MC12 dominated like you said Imo, along with group C, GT1 was the best endurance class but unfortunately the cost like always became extremely high so it was the end of the class, though when manufacturers release hypercars and their track versions (like the P1 gtr or the fxx k) these cars are pretty much modern inspired cars that look and feel very similar to GT1 as the class in general was pretty much hyper/supercars that raced against each other, whether it being super road car that turned into racing or a racing car that was later homologated, the current hypercar class at wec and imsa might be different but at least it opens up for an exciting future

The BPR Global GT championship was a wonderful series, I remember watching the highlights on Top Gear Motorsport. But it was depressing seeing the 911 GT1 join midway through 1996. But it was so fast that one could see that it was going to kill the championship. The series was started for gentlemen drivers to race, and although the McLaren F1 was almost unbeatable in '95 & '96, at least it was available to everyone. ($1m was rather a lot for a road car, but a bargain for the GTR race car. Especially considering the factory support it came with and the fact it could reportedly do somewhere in the region of 30,000 KM between engine rebuilds - enough for an entire season, rather than having to rebuild after every race.) Now Porsche came along with very much a prototype car which was not available to buy and race.

The MC12 being allowed to race was extremely controversial, as it didn't meet the regulations. Iirc not only did it not meet the production requirements, but the bodywork was illegal and too wide. As a 'compromise' its rear wing was limitied in width, instead of the full width of the car (as allowed under the regulations) it was limited to the maximum allowable car width. But that still meant the car was wider than allowed, with more floor area to generate downforce... I remember a Fifth Gear episode from 2003(?), before the MC12 was announced. They followed someone who had been invited to buy a Ferrari F1 car as he went to Maranello for the purchase experience. There was a large black race car with Maserati on it semi-hidden in the garage, the Ferrari man wouldn't tell them what it was. It was of course the MC12, a bespoke race car they were developing from the Enzo to go GT racing as part of a plan to relaunch the Maserati brand. Just like the 911 GT1 in 1995, it broke both the spirit and letter of the rules. But... FIA wants the manufacturers to join and bring their $$$ - what could go wrong?

Proof that a run what you brung rule book always makes for amazing cars! They need to do this again except with a cost cap and a development time window like the Olympics, using a chassis and engine from their current car lineup. Every four years at an undisclosed track until the last minute they have to build a car for "x" amount of money, ready, set, go! Wait, only rule is you can't hire Ross Brawn or Adrian Newey!

Even if current GT3 cars are not as fast or crazy as the original GT1, I think they found a really stable formula. The cars are not terribly expensive, a lot of manufacturers are involved and they are used in a lot of different series.

GT1 is the peak of GT racing for me. Lots of power with moderate aero and requires proper driving technique. Plus they also raced on some pretty cool tracks. GT3 nowadays in comparison is just autobahn cruising. A race car should never have ABS, traction control and rear facing camera in my opinion.

The FIA basically stole the BPR Global GT series. They had just run the ITC into extinction (future video topic?) and wanted something to replace it as part of their plan to have a 2nd series to run & be shown on TV on the weekends between F1 races. They saw how successful Global GT was (a series they did nothing to create) and grabbed it. I remember the matter going to court and astonishment that the FIA won and was allowed to get away with it. Then they badly mismanaged it and just like ITC it died after 2 seasons. GT1 racing lived on a bit longer in the British GT Championship. That was a great series back in the late '90s. With some weird and wonderful cars from small manufacturers (Harrier, Quaife, Sintura...) popping up optimistcly to challenge the venerable Sugden-O'Rourke McLaren F1 and Lister Storm.

It’s a major headache, isn’t it? I like totally different cars racing together, seeing whose design philosophy works best. But after one race, you have your answer. For the sake of entertainment, you need close racing. So you look to the rules and BoP and such. It never works well enough. So you fiddle even more and there goes the excitement. Because if you succeed it’s fake. If you don’t it’s boring. Either way it’s a fixed match. But it did work once, long ago. The muscle cars against Jags mk2 against Minis and Escorts and whatnot. Why then and not now? I can think of only one thing here on the spot, and it’s the tracks. If parts of a track favour either or any philosophy, or different tracks over a season do so, any car has an advantage and a disadvantage somewhere. You might take a gamble then. Cars2 got that bit right at least

Actually, the original GT2 category became GTS before it became GT1 MK2. The original GT3 category became GT2, then GTE, and somewhere along the way in the mid-2000s, the current GT3 category emerged. You have much to learn, GT apprentice.

GT1 was the pinnacle for me ! Prototypes that actually looked and represented their manufacturers road cars, it’s the dream! That being said I know it’s a little boring all the gt3 series, but let’s be honest, it’s a stronghold and a game changer and has help turned the tide on Motorsport to bring it back to this strong period Motorsport is in now, I feel, it’s sustainable and relevant to a lot of extents. Let’s not shit on it 😂

Mercedes secretly purchased a McLaren F1 GTR to use to build their first CLK-GTR. There are photos around of the hybrid looking car, which was then refitted back to spec and sold on. Beating McLaren with their own design essentially. I watched 97-mid 00's. The GT1 world Championship wasn't that great. The Ford GT looked and sounded great though.

The FIA should never have allowed that Maserati. It killed GT1. GT1 was absolutely fantastic in the early to mid 2000s, with many manufacturers, diverse car designs and sounds, spectacular races, and all of that at fairly sensible costs. Then Maserati came along with a prototype. That MC12 was a homologation special just like the Mercedes CLK-GTR or the Toyota GT-One (btw. how can you make a video called "the story of GT1" and not once mention the Toyota GT-One?) Maserati built a prototype race car perfectly adapted to GT1 regulations, then made a road car version of it so that it would count as a GT car. The ACO, having learnt from the disastrous cost explosion that killed the previous generation of GT1, outright banned the MC12 from competing at Le Mans or any ACO-affiliated series like ELMS or ALMS. The FIA and SRO, apparently not having learnt anything, did allow Maserati to compete in, and eventually dominate the FIA GT championship. SRO had promised to slow the car down to the same performance level as the others, through means which we would nowadays call BoP. But that didn't work. The prototype had vastly greater adjustability in setup compared to the production-based cars, which lead to a huge advantage in tire degradation (or lack thereof), which in combination with no balance shift due to the more centrally mounted fuel tank meant it was way more consistent over a race distance. While quali-pace and fastest race laps were pretty similar with the other cars, the MC12 was the only car that could keep up that pace over the whole race distance, making it almost unbeatable. Other Manufacturers saw that there was absolutely no point in competing in FIA GT with a road car based machine, as they would have no chance to be competitive against Maserati's prototype. At the same time they knew that there was no point in building a prototype of their own, as that would only lead to a development war and therefore insane costs, which simply was not worth it for a somewhat obscure category. Especially if you would not be able to bring that car to Le Mans. So all the manufacturers (except Maserati of course) left GT1, some went into GT2 instead. Maserati dominated the FIA GT1 championship for several years, racing only against private teams in ageing customer cars. Meanwhile GT2, which by the rules did not allow direct manufacturer participation and was open only to privateer teams, was flooded by hidden works programs. To the point where most privateers left and went to the new GT3 category instead (which a couple of years later was also flooded with hidden works programs, despite manufacturers not being allowed to compete there either.) After there had not been a single new GT1 car in 4 years, eventually SRO realized that they had to do something and try to attract new manufacturers before none of the old cars were left. GT1 was completely reset with a new rule book, which was supposed to lead to slightly slower but more cost effective cars. The series would get an official "World Championship" title (which until then had only been on offer for F1, Rallye and Touring Cars) And since everybody had to start from scratch, it would be the perfect opportunity to join the series for a new manufacturer. Ratel announced that the series would be limited to 6 different manufacturers, with four cars each for a healthy 24 car grid. Apparently the limit was there to convince manufacturers to enter the series quickly, before being locked out. And the FIA put pressure on the ACO to allow these new GT1 cars at Le Mans, in order to make the category even more attractive to manufacturers. Nissan immediately jumped on the opportunity and announced the development of an R35 GT-R GT1. Sadly, nobody else jumped. The 2008 world financial crisis made manufacturers rather vary about where to spend their money. Also since FIA/SRO did not close the loophole that had allowed the Maserati MC12, it seemed to be only a matter of time until the next prototype would destroy the category. So now SRO had 6 manufacturer slots to fill, but only 1 manufacturer actually built a car for the new rules. Reiter Engineering revived their Lamborghini project, which they had abandoned a couple years earlier when the MC12 showed up. Their Murcielago did not fully comply with the new rule book but apparently was considered close enough. Then the Swiss Matech Team entered the category with the Ford GT, which did not comply with the rules at all as it was a modified version of the GT3 car. But SRO was desperate and needed every "manufacturer" they could get. Eventually the series was further opened up when the previous generation GT1 cars were allowed to take part, of course with some measures in place to slow them down to the pace of the new cars. That is how the "grandfathered" cars form Corvette and Aston Martin ended up in the series, as well as the 6th car. And what was that? Yes, of course! It was the Maserati prototype! Have a guess who won the championship that year... A BoP system as well as success ballast meant that the championship fight was closer than in previous years. But a GT championship where most cars are so old that the road car versions have been out of production for half a decade, is not really a good marketing platform for manufacturers. For 2011 Maserati finally pulled out of GT1, but that did not save the category. Since still nobody but Nissan had actually built a new GT1 car, the series switched to to GT3 cars for the 2012 season. It was still called "GT1 World Championship" due to contractual reasons, but GT1 cars were no longer allowed to participate. Meanwhile ACO had come up with their own new category to replace both GT1 and GT2, which they called GTE. It was basically GT2 but with slightly less restrictions and officially open for manufacturer teams. Damn, that ended up becoming a way longer essay then i intended...
