Two bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha to implement 'One Nation, One Election': the Constitution 129th Amendment Bill 2024 and the Union Territories Laws Amendment Bill 2024. The government called them a step towards facilitating democracy, while the opposition called them an attack on the Constitution's 'basic structure'.
Several opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT), opposed the proposal, calling it "excessive centralisation". They argue that subordinating the term of state assemblies to the term of the Lok Sabha is against the federal structure and democratic rights. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal dismissed these concerns and agreed to send the bill to a joint parliamentary committee.
