These form factor devices are not meant for doing serious work, for better battery life, it would be a great use of the ARM always connected. I'd pick up one right away if they went with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 850, which would possibly make room for an even larger battery. So it would be a truly portable device, with great battery time, good use of Windows S programs, always-on connectivity and when paired with a monitor, keyboard and mouse can serve as some workstation if you need to type out more without getting carpal tunnel.

Just to make a correction that probably many others already made: None of GPD's current UMPCs offer a backlit keyboard. The only current x86 UMPC that offers a backlit keyboard is One Netbook's first One Mix device, so it's strange that this one doesn't. GPD WILL however include a backlit keyboard for their upcoming MicroPC UMPC, but no word on if it'll become a staple for their other future UMPCs as well.

I REALLLY wish on most laptops especially in this form factor (GPD POCKET/POCKET 2) that the battery was placed behind the screen for 3-4x capacity and then room for a second PCIe device, That or the motherboard was placed behind the screen and then battery below the keyboard, this would allow for better passive cooling when not in tablet mode

@@jub8891 Besides Apple popularizing the styling you mention, consumers have been demanding a lot of minimalism sadly. While a an exterior with simple curves or angles (laptop or desktop) in black/silver can look sleek it has been done so much it's boring now. Makes everything look like an appliance. The first iMac or iBook look tacky, but you have to admit there's a certain inspiration and liveliness to their designs that is pretty much gone from the computer market now and it sucks.

Great review as usual Chris! Just one thing, you reviewed both the GPD win and the GPD pocket but this is similar to the pocket, not to the win. Same in your website. I own a pocket 1 and to be honest battery life and keyboard are more of an issue than CPU power... Also lack of 4G is an issue for me. People believe they can have a full computer experience in their pocket but are soon disappointed after buying since you can't write anywhere as fast as a full keybord or even a decent ipad mini keyboard... (like the brydge one). And this thing is going to die in your pocket before you have done much with it... And windows is a pain to use at 7in... Even just 8in would be less of a headache. I believe the new Snadpdragon chips, which are i5 like, would be ideal for battery life and power and would include 4G. Also, the new pocket 2 (with m3 7th gen) has a more usable keyboard than this. And some more screen by reducing the side bezels would help too....

@@Techtablets what about compared to the Win 2?
@Azea98
@Azea98 6 жыл бұрын
@@protocetid It's identical in performance to the Win 2. At least for gaming. They have the same GPU, the HD 615, and the CPU is just slightly better than the Win 2, arfound 10% faster at most according to online benchmarks. Still won't make any difference in gaming performance, since the HD 615 is what's holding their gaming performance back. The biggest problem with the Mix 2s compared to the Win 2 is that it thermal throttles while the Win 2 doesn't. So if you're gaming for more than a few minutes at a time, then the Mix 2s will slow down a bit, while the Win 2 will keep on working just as well as before because it has a better cooler that can handle the load. If you want a portable PC for non gaming purposes the One Netbook Mix 2s or GPD Pocket 2 are perfect for that, but for gaming the Win 2 is better for the price. It also has a bigger 9800mah battery plus a built in controller.

Genuinely don't care about webcams - they're never as good as the front facing cellphone ones anyway. Also I genuinely can't remember the last time I used my webcam, it's just not a thing I need. Battery life is non-negotiable though. Anything less than 8-10 hours is automatically out of the running for me. Shame, I'd be really interested in a tiny laptop alternative like this. Looks like it could be quite convenient when I just need to take notes or something, I'm looking to downsize my daily carry for my average uni days...

@@sciencefiles3649 I do understand that. What I don't understand is user case for such small device. It's simply uncomfortable even for productivity tasks bcoz of the screen and keyboard size. Same with other tasks. So, why would u buy this device for 600 USD, what would u do with it?

Thermal throttling, again. Dear Intel, do something ... or fix the TDP specs.
@MichaelFlatman
@MichaelFlatman 6 жыл бұрын
it's not thermal throttling if its above baseclock :)
@legyes
@legyes 6 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelFlatman Clocks above base clock is thermal throttling. Intel CPUs are slow as [censored] if can't reach some turbo speeds. Below base clock are unusable. Like my Thinkpad E480 :(
@MichaelFlatman
@MichaelFlatman 6 жыл бұрын
@@legyes yeah it is a bit of a bummer tbh, but to achieve full turbo clocks requires a lot of power, eg.the I5 8250U rated at 15w TDP can use up to 35-40w when all 4 cores are on turbo, before the power limit kicks in.
@legyes
@legyes 6 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelFlatman Yes, but after that the thermal limit kicks in and the CPU downclocks at 800MHz or below. With disabled turbo the I/O speed is a joke.
