Louie Simmons has gotten knowledge from Olympic lifting as well. Supertrainingby Yuri Verkhoshansky (Author), Mel Siff (Author) is one book. Another is Science and Practice of Strength Training by Dr. William Kraemer and Vladimir Zatsiorsky.

@sk8forlife90 to a certain degree yes, your muscles perform the movement and you have to train certain movements and therefore muscles to bring your weakpoints up because you are only as strong as your weakest link

I guess I was right. in the Westside barbell squat and deadlift manual, on page 153 louie simmons has his lifters do power snatches, barbell cleans, a split snatch and of course other small workouts to assits the powerlifting lifts. I bet powerlifting helps olympic lifting and olympic lifting helps powerlifting.

At westside barbell is Louie Simmons who based much of his training off of powerlifters, olympic lifters and just plain strength athletes.

@valgez1 power lifters may only lack the coordination. front delt development and tricep development is not lacking in powerlifters. also they do barbell cleans and good mornings in their workouts at westside barbell to assist the deadlift. After attempting olympic lifts today in the gym i have discovered what i said yesterday was slightly off. both olympic and powerlifters are both strength athletes. they just compete different lifts. they are about the same strength as each other.

@stilgoin1126 It's not about size, but about creating as much power as possible without losing any of it with poor technique or mechanics. Proper technique will allow smaller guys to lift heavy weights because they are correctly channeling their power throughout the lift. It is hard to see all the many components in these lifts at regular speeds, but when broken down these are the MOST intricate and technical lifts known in the world.
@Apjooz

@stilgoin1126 The biggest clean and jerk ever is 266 kg, and the lifter, Taranenko, was about 150 or 160 kg in bodyweight. Massive guy.

A guy from New Jersey in the late 60'ds early 70'ds Bob Benarski (sorry spelling?) was AWESOME! at a weight of 242lbs he could do a clean & Jerk of 485lbs...but you're right most USA athletes just olympic life to train for another sport. In 1971 the USA only had 1,200 register olympic lifter (AAU). The USSR has over 400,000 register olympic lifters, tuff to beat those numbers.

@Apjooz Do not generalize. Olympic weightlifters tend to be "ripped" in weight classes 94 and below. HW and SHW are usually not. Some examples: 105kg class - Andrei Aramnau. 105+ - just about everyone, Rezazadeh, Steiner, Chigishev, Taranenko etc. The only SHW that I know who was somewhat "ripped" - Kurlovich. But this man is an exception. But I agree with you, power and muscle volume have almost nothing to do with each other. Training is completely different, so are the results.

@valgez1 they could easily clean comparable weight. I am talking about Westside barbell powerlifters who regularly clean in their workouts. they have both strength and force development. they also do high pulls which is a similar exercise. since powerlifters also do good mornings they lowerbody strength is easily as high as olympic. Since Westsiders max out every week they train heavy all year. in olympic lifting the bar speed is high, meaning the force is low and motor unit recruiment is lower.
@SplinterCellFugitive
@SplinterCellFugitive 13 жыл бұрын
@valgez1 there is not a thing that you mentioned that westside barbell powerlifters do not due. talk about nervous system getting jacked up, through some band tension on the bar that will pull you down faster and makes you more explosive at the top.. finally, I have discovered that olympic lifts are used in powerlifting training, ESPECIALLY THE POWER CLEAN. I will bet million that Westside powerlifters are as fast as olympic lifters.

Now I m 22 and I can bench 175, squat 240 and dl 260 RAW. BUT I SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS. Olympic weightlifting is fuckin awesome. RAW, BRUTAL STRENGTH AND IMMACULATE TECHNIQUE. Fuckit. I am starting some serious flexibility and technique training on OWL. I wanna C & J 200kg.

@blackbelt42boxer wouldnt think the most strongest or powerful in everything, but yes in their sport they are, you cant compare, oly lifters, strongman and powerlifters IMO and do you have to bring your elbow to shoulder lvl when you snatch? cause i cant do that because of my handwrist

@DreamBig2GoBig @DreamBig2GoBig fuck yeah! the thing i love about being a olympic lifter the most is the surprise factor. you don't look that strong, but really your some of the strongest people in the world. like going to a beach, a lot of guys got way bigger muscles than you and they look stronger, but your really easily twice as strong and explosive as them. no one can fuck with olympic lifters.
@SplinterCellFugitive
@SplinterCellFugitive 13 жыл бұрын
If u study the physiology of band work and chains, these make you more explosive than any free weight exercise and indeed require as much explosive strength as olympic lifting. I bet olympic lifters use them too.
@buzzkilling

IronWarrior, you are commenting on a lifter name Kendrick Farris. He has been lifting this way forever. There is no indication that he almost "fucked up" his knee during this lift, no more than any other time he makes a big lift. It's how he has lifted for years. Comments like yours often come from people who don't understand the sport of Olympic-style weightlifting.
@valgez1
@valgez1 13 жыл бұрын
@SplinterCellFugitive It's not about Delt or Tricep development - that is bodybuidling. Deadlift and squat are most basic lifts, as compared to power clean, snatch and jerk - these require the ultimate physical and mental abilities, joint strength and mobility, unmatchable whole - body strength (the movement is explosive - very different from basic static exercises), not mentioning Million - volts nerve system required to generate the power - with all due respect - powerlifting is not a match.
@SplinterCellFugitive

@valgez in what way? while these weights are impressive for THESE lifts, there are plenty of powerlifters who could full squat this weight below parallel as a warm-up since many of them raw squat 700 to 850 pounds to parallel.

therefore there is little difference than I thought before. i am sure olympic lifters do many of the same workouts, although powerlifters would require more chest development. But i am NOw sure olympic lifters can deadlift and squat about the same, but the Bench press might challenge the olympic lifters. I would agree the bench press is the least useful to most athletes while deadlifting and box squatting will help basically most athletes.

Actually they were pressing near the weight they were JERKING, with all the technique "enhancements", which is pretty insane when you think about it. That made it overlap too greatly, plus the judging was too inconsistent, plus the meets were ridiculously long, so it was dropped.

@deanblaze2000 And thats is why most people cant understand why Paul Anderson was strong as he was. You do realize that Paul Anderson never worked out before, he only did weight lifting for a few short weeks before the olympics? I did that kind of exercise before like on this video once, I found it pointless so I never did it again. So how are you going to lift that random heavy object that weighs 300-400Ib's when all you are use to doing is jerking the weight up?

@RobRVD420 i am sure olympic lifters excell in the olympics but how about at a powerlifting meet? olympic lifts are impressive in their coordination, but powerlifters can lift the heaviest weights. while an olympic lifter may clean and press 450 and a powerlifter cannot, a powerlifter can squat 750 pounds raw just BELOW parrallel. so im quite sure they could full squat 600. can the olympic lifter full squat 600? perhaps the ones that press 550

im a bodybuilder and it always puzzles me how these guys are still pretty skinny. Considering the weight they are lifting (even if it is 1 rep) you have to have a massive amount of strengh to do that and with strengh comes size. I could never be able to clean and jerk 312 kg but i am more then twice the guys size and most likley weigh alot more

how much weight is on these bars? (the bars are 20kg right?)
@celloprof
@celloprof 13 жыл бұрын
@deanblaze2000 That's a matter of opinion. Jerking up the weight is for weaklings. Most people cant comprehend why Paul Anderson was so strong. Clean and pressing 435Ib with ease as if it were 235Ib pressing a 300Ib dumb bell over his head with ONE ARM as if it were nothing. Guys like Paul Anderson got strong from man handling the weight, using brute strength because there were no machines around.
@SplinterCellFugitive
@SplinterCellFugitive 13 жыл бұрын
what I was saying is that powerlifters could squat with just as much speed and acceleration at the same percentages of your one rep max than a olympic lifter could snatch and jerk. powerlifters compete at 100% or their one rep max while olympic lifters do not. if olympic lifters did this, they could not move the bar at that speed. Olympic lifter could not squat 100% of their one rep max any faster than a powerlifter could.

It is impossible to recruit all myofibrils and motor units even though you are moving 90% of your one rep max at a fast rate. but powerlifter train from 90-105% every week in max effort. they may do 12 sets of their one rep max. A powerlifting training will recruit more motor units than olympic training although the to are similar. Olympic lifters claim to fame is superior coordination, balance and rotator cuff integrity. Powerlifters claim to fame is pure strength in terms of maximum weight.

@celloprof Not sure if your serious but just in case....... calling them weaklings is just highly inaccurate and a little ignorant of the facts. The techniques required to move these free weights,which i'm certain you cannot move, take years to master and a lot of functional strength / explosive power. It requires the entire body, without the assistance of machines which balance and stabilise the weight for you. Real strength is developed by moving free weights, not machines. Didn't you know?
