@sukaicosmica6 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on whether you are referring to cold/warmth or degress...You can say it's colder (there is "more" cold ) or there are "less" degrees, and, viceversa, it's warmer (there is "more" warmth or less "cold") or "more" degrees. But in general terms if you say "it's minus ten" and the other person says "no, it's way more" I would understand that it's warmer because you have spoken about degrees. In terms of degrees I think less is under and more is up.

In English you wouldn't use more or less in that context. It's warmer or colder or the temperature is higher or lower as on a scale, so both wrong!! It probably doesn't translate too well

Hi Janni !! You are absolutely right , ST Moritz is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in Europe !! (a little bit expensive though) And you guys were really lucky with the weather . You are a good skier and look really good in that outfit !! Good vlog as usual !! I agree with you and Jon aboat the more and less question !! Please keep on vlogging !!! Wow, looks like an intermediate skiers dream-I love those huge, side open gentle slopes! Great skiing Janni! My opinion on the temperature thing: more cold means LOWER temperatures or yes, I agree, "more cold" though I would say this isn't the best English. But I would never say it's "less cold" as the temperature drops. To me, "less cold" definitely means an increase in temperature (warmer). In other words, I agree with you guys! haha

I was just thinking about this whole temperatures thing yesterday and today I come to watch the vlog and you are discussing it as well! Both ways of saying it work for me though :)
@EthanFromLondon6 жыл бұрын
In English it depends on the context: -12 is colder than -10 (er in colder is = more). We never say 'more colder' it would be 'more cold'. When you are talking about temperature specifically and you want to describe -12 vs -10, you would say its 2 degrees less (i.e. -12 is 2 degrees less than -10) not more. If you say like Jon said, its -10 and then someone says no its "more" it means colder, otherwise they would say its higher. Hope this helps.

St.Moritz and upper Engadin valley is my favorite place in the entire Alps, I always say if I win lottery this is where I'm buying the house! :) It is high, so has proper winter and snow, it is above the fog and low clouds, and it is south of the main Alpine ridge so it has as much sun as the Mediterranean, and nature is just stunning, amazing lakes in the valley and mountains around, perfect for skiing, biking and hiking! Damn, when is that lottery coming! :) That was picture perfect winter day, sun, snow and fat minus! Yeah, I agree with your theory, when you got to deeper minus it is more cold, not less

I agree with you. It´s every time though that when I talk about negative temperatures I also have to point out what do mean by that, but the other way of saying has double meaning in it as well. Unless we all start to read temperatures in Kelvins we better just agree that it´s ok to talk about the temperature in a difficult way. It´s cold dammit it cannot be said easy.. :D Greets from Finland.

Its a scale yes. The higher the number in minus degress the more cold it is. If you -10 and go to minus -20 the higher the (-) degree. If you reverse it and say its -20 and the degree is now -10 the higher THE VARMTH degree will be, yes (maybe this was what your friends meant) but not a HIGHER COLD degree beacuse it goes towards 0.

@jaejayjx5 жыл бұрын
With temperature you're right it is a scale, but it's a number scale and so normal number/mathematical rules apply. -10 Is lower, or less than on the scale than -2. Really you'd just say "colder" tbh. Or "way colder"... along those lines! 👍🏾😊
@playitu26 жыл бұрын
-10 < -2 < 0 < +2 < +10 this is the increasing way in the scale. If you want to compare which one represents "more cold" or "more warm" you have to look at the absolute values. -10 is more cold than -2 (because 10 is bigger than 2). +10 is more warm than +2 (again because 10 is bigger than 2). You can't just say "it's way more", you have to specify what you mean. By saying "it's way more" it can be misleading, because "more" usually means higher temperature. So if your friends mean that -10 is "way more (higher temperature)" than -2, it's wrong. Saying -10 is "way more (cold)", then -2 it's correct.

If it's -10 today but tomorrow it's -5, the temperature rices so it's more (it's warmer), and if tomorrow it's -20, the temperature goes down, it's less (it's colder). Could it be a difference in the language, I can't remember much Swedish anymore so maybe someone from Sweden could say if you talk about temperatures in a different way :D

Yes, but if you say its "colder" it is "more" cold and not "less" cold. it got less temperature but it is more cold
@wertfreund24806 жыл бұрын
about the "less +/-more" both of You are right because temperature ist about the 0°C point and -12°C by numbers m o r e than -3°C but also "lower! temperature. have a nice one!

jon's got really good at filming
@Emmba2294alsl6 жыл бұрын
so you say its -20 degrees today but tomorrow its going to be even more cold (like for example - 25) but if you say it like jon said it " its -10 " " no no its way more" then it means "no no its way more degrees out than -10" which basically would mean its warmer. To be right jon u would have to say "no no its colder"
@SterlingSanders6 жыл бұрын
Jannie Deler If you're going to use "more" or "less" when it comes to temperature, they apply differently to warm and cold. "More warm" means warmer, "more cold" means colder. "Less warm" means colder, "less cold" means warmer. Jon and Janni are correct, unless they are saying "less warm" to mean colder, then they are also correct. But if they're saying "less cold," means colder, no, they are incorrect.

The thing there are two ways to look at this. The first is hot♨ and cold💨 are two different standards on their own, like there's more hot♨ and less hot♨ in the same way there more cold💨 and less cold💨. For example, on the standard of hot♨ if it was 2 degrees then it goes up to 5 it's more hot♨, but if it goes down to -1 it's less hot♨. Then on the standard of cold💨 if it was 2 degrees the it goes down to -2 it's more cold💨. Then in that case you are both right. The second is that hot♨ and cold💨 are in two different categories of temperature, meaning when you go to the positive side of zero🅾 as you go up its more, and the same if you go to the negative side of zero🅾 and go down its still more in the opposite direction. So if it was 2 degrees and it goes down to -2 then it past zero🅾 so it's more cold💨. So in this case your right😆 .

Looking at it in from a thermodynamic point of view as we do when we teaching the kids in school, we would say it's less degrees outside. The problem is more how u guys say it, it's more cold (det är mer kallt) would be better to just say it's colder today than yesterday (kallare idag än igår).

simple, if it's colder it's colder, if it's warmer it's warmer. in terms of degree in America we just say, it's -20 or 20 below zero. if it's hot we say it's hotter... I think it should be less if it's colder.
