Just seconds away from the Melpomene projects was a powerful street crossing that drew many people from around the city for the wrong reasons, and is the same block that Birdman and Slim grew up on.

Tyler Perry from Atlanta at this point ... Let's not forget the forebears like Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe "King" Oliver. Bechet was from downtown (7wd), Jelly too but Jelly cut his teeth uptown around Shakspeare Park when it was called Morris Park. Joe Oliver was from uptown on Dryades. Preciate yall work for the hip hop legends but New Orleans been contributing to pop music for a long time! Let's honor the forgotten legends too ...

When was Martin Luther King called Melpomine St? I seriously would like to know because uptown felt like a whole different world compared to the Westbank and Downtown when i was growing up.

My dad from UPTOWN out the 3 it changed throughout the country 🇺🇸 once he was assassinated 🪧🏘️ I’m the guy in the video talking Sidenote from google The complex occupies ten city blocks, bounded roughly by South Robertson Street, Clio Street, Simon Bolivar Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (formerly Melpomene Avenue). There were four three-story buildings and two four-story buildings for families and a high-rise for the elderly. At a peak height of 12 stories, the Guste high-rise is the tallest public housing complex in the city.

@@thdegj Uptown is busier and has more to offer than downtown, and by downtown I don't mean the CBD, Once you get out of the French Quarter. downtown is just small cornerstones, bars and cafes (now) There's more for tourist uptown . The neighborhoods were different too. Uptown had a lot DJ's, basically speakers on a porch with a DJ. most of the rap and bounce artist came from uptown. Most of second lines started uptown too. Now that the lower parts of uptown has been revamped/gentrified its different even moreso.
