"I'm the bad guy? How did that happen?" - scariest line, because stuff like that does happen every day. A bad day, a bad month, a bad year, and a good person can go very bad without even realizing it.

Idk man, that kind of generalization doesn't fit. This dude made multiple crazy and unhinged responses and yeah I can see why, but a normal person does not behave that way. @@stevesmith9617 Normal people do crazy shit crap all the time, History does tell us this, history tells us that people can be pushed to the brink of breaking and snapping. People in white collar neighbourhoods know perfectly well how some men can go from loving and caring for family to wanting them dead so he can be with a new mistress, In this case lust was these peoples breaking points. How about the normal everyday people kidnapped and told to haul drugs to America because if they dont the family will die. This mans family might also die because he didnt make it and died on the way and those people are forced to push themselves to make it. A woman (I forgot where but it wasnt the USA) hunted down her daughters rape and murder suspect and got each and every one. Same with the video from several decades ago where a man was waiting on a pay phone for the cops and the man who sold his daughter into sex slavory, That man waited pulled his gun and shot him in the face. History doesnt say what you think it does.

There’s some details not everyone picks up. One is that he’s a Vietnam veteran (you can see unit photos and a Purple Heart citation bearing his name on his mother’s wall). As for where he goes every day, he’s been job hunting, you can tell by his newspaper, the one he uses to plug up his shoe, he’s drawn circles all over the personal ads.

11:10 "This man is on edge today!" Fun fact: Iron Maiden has a song called "Man on the Edge" and the lyrics are directly based on Falling Down. The freeway is jammed And it's backed up for miles The car is an oven and baking is wild Nothing is ever the way it should be What we deserve we just don't get you see A briefcase, a lunch and a man on the edge Each step gets closer to losing his head Is someone in heaven are they looking down 'Cause nothing is fair just you look around Falling down Falling down Falling down... He's sick of waiting of lying like this There's a hole in the sky for the angels to kiss Branded a leper because you don't fit In the land of the free You can live by your wits Once he built missiles a nations defence Now he can't even give birthday presents Across the city he leaves in his wake A glimpse of the future a cannibal state Falling down Falling down Falling down...

There's a dual theme between the two characters. Dfens lost his family getting divorced and the cop lost a baby early on and his wife never really recovered. Both strove to take care of their families and neither was really cut out for what the world became as they got older. One got fired and one retired. One's wife tries to stay away and the other's depends on him.
@Ebb0Productions
@Ebb0Productions Жыл бұрын
Nice catch. Both also got more aggressive over the movie. When the cop got more assertive and aggressive, it was good for him. It was a missing link in his personality. He used to be too nice. But Will already had an aggressive side to him. So more aggression was too much. He needed empathy, like the cop already had.
@K0ntakt5
@K0ntakt5 Жыл бұрын
@@Ebb0Productions the cop's empathy was phony- more manipulative than genuine. if you look at the way he was attempting to smooth talk the mother who did not want to talk with the police, the whole bit from pendergrast was an act to get her to talk some more. then they left after he got what he wanted out of her- he wasn't really that concerned about her. the same at the end, he just wanted to end his day and get out alive, saying what he had to just long enough to distract "D-fens". people are generally this way, there are no pure empaths. sure they might relate to certain people. but no one empathizes with everyone all the time. "D-fens" might relate to the groundskeeper because the man has a family, he might relate to the man who was 'not economically viable'-- none of that was an act like the kind pendergrast was capable of putting up. in fact, that's what makes "D-fens" different than most all other characters in this film. once he snapped, he lost all caring about a society that he thinks turned its back on him. he puts up no pretense or phony act just in order to get along with others. everything he does is simply the way he is at this point after he lost everything, he has no filters, nothing phony about him, he does what he wants when he wants. in that sense he is free from the constraints of society. pendergrast goes back to being a cop and has to continue playing by the rules of society and be a phony when necessary, though in the end, he too will be retired and become economically unviable, same as everyone else

“Kike” springs from the Yiddish/German word for the shape known as a circle. It was heavily attributed to folks seeking harbor from the greatest western catastrophe of the 20th century. Most of those folks, for one reason or another, were unable to write their names on the paperwork necessary for said harbor. As a result, in lieu of names, they drew circles where needed.

And that's an extremely tame example. The majority of wealth in this country is inherited, owned by people who didn't work for it. In general, all people do work throughout their lives, and it's not all the same quality. However, those making 1000x or 10000x more a year isn't commiserate to their value so much as the zip code they were born in and their willingness to engage in predatory, exploitative business practices.

That's the difference between understanding somebody and the pressure they're under and all that and condoning the decisions they're making and the action they're taking. And the fact that you can actually _understand_ where he's coming from is one of the good qualities of this movie. (Unless you really want to go and discuss capitalism and the American Dream,) the key moment in this movie is when the protagonist asks "I'm the bad guy now? How did it come to this?" ... like, how do you get from real, sensible concerns about your situation and shit happening to you to the point where you just snap under pressure? Where is that wrong turn you take that takes you down that rabbit hole, and how do you know in advance and keep it from happening? Can we somehow lend people like that more of a hand before they go on a rampage? (And also: When the police ask the wife if he's hit her before, it's absolutely no laughing matter. Obviously it's a complicated matter, but having to wait for somebody to actually harm somebody before you can do something about it, is not exactly the protect part of "protect and serve". By default I would assume that if a court rules that a dad not only doesn't receive any part of custody for a child but _also_ gets _no_ visitation right, they don't do that for no reason.)

His mother voiced concern over his behavior, on how she was borderline terrified of him and how he acted at home. 40:20 Deep down he's a good man, who always tries to do the right thing and stand up for what is right, but life has beaten him down so hard that his kindness and understanding are slipping away. It's like that line from the Joker in Dark Knight...."You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain". That's the situation here. He did all he could, but eventually the pain and struggle overtook him, and he became the very thing he was against. It's a a very sad film about how indifferent society is to those who are suffering inside.

That's not accurate. Deep down he probably thought he was a good man but he was clearly a racist. Not as racist as the neo-nazi, but a racist towards asians. He rationalized putting others in danger due to his selfishness. He didn't care about the well-being of anyone but himself. He was not a good man. He was delusional and attempting to empathize with his character is an entirely misguided perception.

@@davidlee4903 That's a hard one to decipher actually, and the store clerk scene really clouds the waters. There was def racist tendencies, though I don't think he was outright racist. Kind of like he misses the old days before consumerism, and likely blames in some way other cultures perhaps. Like he was pissed about prices and what not but again there are many like him where the times changed too quick for him to adjust. Likely not wording it all properly, but I think he wasn't "racist" but def had many racist like tendencies? Most generalized racism if you can understand what I mean? Like he didn't likely look down on other people, and would help someone regardless of race but still held opposition to the changes he was seeing. Just shooting from the hip here and throwing possibilities out by no means my opinion, just trying to have other viewpoints of possibility I guess

When this came out $.85 was an outlandish amount for a soda. The thing is, this could be any of us. We all have stressful days, weeks, and so far for me this whole year. When I watched this the first time I was a lot younger and didn't let life get to me, but even then I could feel his frustration. The world will beat you down until it feels you can't take another breath, but then you do and keep on going...This guy didn't take that breath, he screamed. He decided to lash back and fight his way to freedom. I don't know about anyone else, but I imagine we all consider that breath sometimes and don't want to take it. The release of that rage would feel so good that we can nearly feel like it would be worth it, but most of us have someone we love enough to fight it down. We never need to forget that and the world shouldn't keep pushing sometimes. Even a good person can only take so much. Edit: He wasn't a bad guy.

We're all aware of construction crews just wasting money to meet their quota, plus I put the blame mostly on the kid that helped. But don't you ever step on someones private property, he's lucky he didn't get shot on the spot.

@@johnjohnnston3498 He assaulted the store owner, stole his bat and destroyed property. He brandished a firearm and fired it in a private business. He trespassed on two properties. He murdered a man. He held 3 people hostage, including a child. He destroyed public property and threatened multiple civilians with firearms. He broke his restraining order. He shot an LEO. Need I say more?

This movie and The Game is the reason why Michael Douglas was my favorite actor in the 90s.

In my early to mid 50's I began to become invisible in my field / job market. I recognized the discrimination for what it was and just moved onto other things. Life happens y'all. And sometimes it ain't fair. Sometimes it sucks.
