This 1/48 scale Astute class sub is and continues to be me and my families weekend fun. After reading most of the comments I would like to clarify that it did not cause a divorce (very lucky for me!) but it has been a blast to own and operate one of Dwayne Hill’s builds. The videos really don’t do justice for the size and detail it has. At the local ponds around where I live, it quickly draws attention as I use a gorilla pull cart to move it from the bed of the truck to the water and before I have even done an operational check on the model before placing it in the water I easily have 5-20 enthusiastic people surrounding me and my family. I will say it’s odd owning an r/c model that weighs more than me after the hull is full of water. I use waders and I get into the pond to put the sub in the water and to take it out to make sure I don’t damage it. I honestly can’t even lift it out of the water from the shore without being in the water as it will take me in with it and likely damage it so I don’t even try that method 😂. And to those wondering, I trusted Bob and his experience to go with the high frequency radio. Not for the failsafe features but because where I live the water has too many minerals that even with the highest quality 72mhz radio systems have issues with the signal penetrating. So I have to forget about the fully submerged operation. But like Bob said, set your models up how you prefer (radio types, fail safes etc). To each their own. And I have zero issues with running this model at periscope depth. Between Dwayne Hill and Bob Martin, I am a satisfied customer of theirs. And promise I will be purchasing more models from Bob at the Nautilus Dry Docks.

Maybe a mini video camera like the newer boats. Could be in the bow or in scope. Like to see one built with launch tubes, SSBN or SSN. Makes me feel homesick. Grad sub school day Thresher went down.Is that diesel boat, DBFE, in the background operational? First boat USS Rasher AGSS 269. They had cut her and a couple others between Main Control and Foward Battery and added a 30 ft section for the radar components. When reverted back to SS 20 feet of the space became the CPO quarters. MMCS(SS) USN Ret. Could the antenna work like a real boat's, floating wire?

High frequency video means no wireless video underwater, sir. You want live video? You run an ugly and limiting cable behind your boat all the way back to you ashore.
@sdoc3
@sdoc3 2 жыл бұрын
HF video will not work submerged, so the semi-best solution is for someone to put a GoPro 10 in a waterproof housing and integrate that as good as possible while not ruining the authentic look. Or you could tow a buoy behind but that would probably also destroy the authentic appearance...

I'm not sure having the fail safe activate the throttle is a great idea. It's fine if you just momentarily lose communication but if there's an actual problem with the radio and the boat is facing away from you then it's going to just keep going. Wouldn't always be a problem but I can see some situations where it definitely would be. It would probably be best just to blow the ballast and have it sit still or at least have it go full rudder so that it goes in circles.
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 2 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ, based on decades of RC sub experience. First and foremost, you need it on the surface. Setup this way is the least disruptive to the operational experience. But, hey... there are arguments for each. Build your boat and set it up in the manner that best suits your comfort and your operational style.
@DoRC
@DoRC 2 жыл бұрын
@@RCSubGuy yeah I don't really have any sub experience I'm just talking from a general RC experience point of view. From that point of view you really don't want the fail safe to include something that allows the vehicle to keep going. Usually you want whatever failsafe if you have set up to be designed to have the vehicle stop moving. Like I said I have no sub experience though. Will the sub not surface just by blowing ballast? I just think it would be a real bummer to have an issue with your radio that wasn't a momentary glitch and and then watch your sub drive away on you.
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 2 жыл бұрын
@@DoRC By having both planes and ballast bringing the boat to surface, you have redundancy. What if your ballast system has failed? Down it goes.. Again... it's really up to the operator to determine what is best for them, their operational environment and their driving style.

Red October? Need some hydrojets inserted along the sides running from bow to stern. Probably be easier, and cheaper just to add the openings on bow and stern and keep it traditionally powered.
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 2 жыл бұрын
That boat suffered from lack of good intel on the Typhoon class. The producers took their best guess based on the few bits of reference they had as well as a LOT of creative license. The beavertail stern is butt-ugly, in my opinion. I'd way rather do the proper Typhoon (the way it was supposed to look) with the opening and closing caterpillar drive doors (functional, of course!)

I know nothing about RC subs, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. When the RX enters failsafe, you said the air pump turns on. Where does that draw air from? I got the impression it went to the snorkel, but if your tallest mast has gone underwater to lose signal, won’t the air pump just be sucking in more water?
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Correct! But this boat also has an onboard gas system. if the boat is fully submerged, it blows compressed gas into the ballast tank to bring it to the surface. I typically build my boats with slight positive buoyancy, so in the case of loss of power or signal, it will eventually float to the surface

Now to be up to new design principles you'll have to build a prop with the dual blade design effency. You could if it is possible add a remote camera in the bow like say a Go Pro and have a way of viewing you potential underwater obstructions assuming you could work out radio control.
@RCSubGuy
@RCSubGuy Жыл бұрын
I'm not sold on torroidal prop efficiency in this scale. Sure, it looks cool, and maybe it's quieter, but neither of those help a scale RC submarine. Underwater cameras have been done. Unfortunately in 90% of the cases, water clarity will be such that an underwater camera would be next to useless for navigation.

What would It require to build A submarine that Is most create of plastic, can carry around 22 pounds, can stear left and right a little, can travel 6000 miles In one tank(Does not have to go fast) and has gps? How much would It cost? Is It possible? Around that size maybe little bigger. Thanx. So I can import fresh bananas
