One of the biggest solar plants unveiled in Kenhardt, Northern Cape

Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has unveiled one of the biggest solar plants in the country based in Kenhardt in the Northern Cape.
The Kenhardt solar plants has three power plants located in close proximity, collectively generating 540 megawatts of power. For more on this, we cross to SABC News Reporter Ulrich Hendriks.

In 2007 I bought a small Solar Panel and a 100 Amp Battery in addition to the 24 hour homemade Turbine for the house lights,they're still running today.Thirty years from the Day of Independence Government is woken to the existence of excess free Sunshine and Solar Panels by a foreign company yet we have hundreds of thousands of "Engineers" in the country. If I was Eskom I would discourage this sort of innovation to let Supply Chain eat.

It's great that the Northern Cape is getting jobs, but renewable energy projects need to be built as near to consumers as possible as - the further away energy is generated to where it's consumed, much is lost along the way - this will mean the expansion of transmission & distribution infrastructure which is very expensive. For this reason all existing power plants should be converted into renewable energy plants so we can take advantage of existing grid infrastructure. We will need some solar farms for nearby towns etc, but farmers could earn a stable basic income via agrivoltaics. Instead, we need to think of cities as solar farms! Stupidity: doing the same thing over again but expecting different results. Nature also needs space to do its thing (clean the air & water, cycle nutrients & energy flows, produce oxygen, decompose dead stuff, make soil, provide resiliency via biodiversity), awa allow plants & animals to thrive. ALL human systems exist within the ecological system - without a healthy Earth humans cannot survive or thrive.
