This is one of those games that feels like it learned all the RIGHT lesson's from Silent Hill 2 and Jacob's ladder. It knows what it wants to be and executes it perfectly. Edit: I want to mention that Anya is doing an incredible job, all things considered. She managed to keep Curly alive in THAT STATE with minimal equipment, medicine, and medical training. Everyone gives her shit in-game, but she's literally doing the best she can with what she has.

Iirc though alight spoilers but we are playing an unreliable narrator. So we technically only see how the person were playing as sees Anya and treats her. And that's why it seems like so many people give her shit and why a lot of people misinterpret the game

Slight spoilers? Please play or watch the full game if you haven't already, its incredible. I like how John uses his normal voice for Jimmy because he's supposed to be the protagonist and has a slightly different one for Curly. Even if the main character isnt a self insert but a distinct character, you usually use your normal voice for the protagonist since you're in control over them. Then the game makes it apparent how awful and vile Jimmy is and you immediately hate the fact that you tied yourself wirh his character. Idk just something interesting I picked up on.

I agree with the commenter who mentioned there's something uniquely upsetting about this depiction of pain and suffering. It's not just that the Captain's condition is completely, revoltingly awful to behold - skinless, mutilated, unable to even blink. If the Captain was just a weird macabre prop like that, it'd be unpleasant but forgettable. But the fact that you play as him in the pre-crash segments, understand who he is as a person (or was before the crash), and then play as someone who absolutely fucking hates him so much for what he's done to them that he forces him to stay alive in agony... it's fucking *awful*. Chilling stuff. I really want to see where this goes. EDIT: I watched the rest of it. It was. Upsetting. Does mouthwash work on your brain, asking for a friend. #Justice4Curly

i think part of it as well is how, circumstances aside, it's a fairly mundane horror to be inflicted on someone. it's not like what happens to him is some out-there sci-fi concept like it would be in a Black Mirror episode. he's just a horrifically burned person like any number of people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. you don't need to crash into an asteroid to end up like Curly, you just need to be very, very, very unlucky in your day to day life.

Yeah this one is more than worth finishing. There is so much to dissect and it's all framed in such a cinematic way. The game's story still hasn't left my mind. It really really leaves a mark when you puzzle it all together. It's disturbing in a way I didn't expect.

the fact that you didn't finish the game (and especially didn't finish it before ranking it) is so painful... I really hope you go back to it! the story kicks off majorly in the 2nd half, which you stopped just before. 😭 I'm glad that you still enjoyed it and happy to see it's ranked highly regardless, but it really is so much better than what you stopped at. the first hour of the game isn't bad by any means, but it starts to really come together and cement itself as a phenomenal game in the second hour (the game only takes around two hours to finish). you basically cut it off right before all the major story bombshells start hitting you. even if you don't do it on a stream, I think it's absolutely worth finishing on your own time either way. I really don't think it's the kind of game you can form a solid opinion of until you've finished it, since, again-so much of the story payoff happens in the second half.

I'd highly recommend getting it and playing yourself before watching anything else on it. It's only around three hours, and you really should get through the game knowing as little as possible for full effect. I'm not being hyperbolic when I call it a modern masterpiece.

Okay, but for real though: If not in a stream setting, check out the rest of Mouthwashing, John. If you liked these first few parts, you will absolutely get a kick out of the rest of the game. It's also only around 2 hours long. Since I discovered this game, I have played and shown it to others several times more. Genuinely one of the best pieces of horror this year.

I think it was on tvtropes, but I saw speculation somewhere that anya might have more than the reason she gives for not wanting to force something (medication) into someone else's body (down curly's throat) with all the noises it makes when jimmy does it instead, it doesn't seem too far-fetched.
