I’ve always felt the same way about this scene. Richard Bright (Neri) played this scene perfectly. That barely perceptible nod and the look of resignation that he knows what he has to do made this scene. Bright does not get the credit he deserves.

John Cazale was the best actor of them all. The kids use a played-out acronym. I’m not a kid. Dude was the real deal. He made only 5 films, and all 5 were nominated for an academy award! Then he dropped dead. That, my friends, is a true legend. He never made a bad picture. Dog Day Afternoon and the Deer Hunter are 2 of the greatest films ever made. But the Conversation is beyond all. That is, to my sensibilities, the finest acting by John Cazale. Today they’d dress him up in a superhero costume and control his tweets. This dude was a renegade. Before the horse shit of Hollywood truly took over. The studio system has now killed cinema. It was a good run. Enjoy your superhero CGI games. I remember film.

He wouldn't have been shocked at all what Fredo had done. He would probably have predicted that since Fredo was an imbecile with zero self-esteem, that he would have been coerced by his enemies... and not even fully aware of what he was doing. Vito, the absolute master, would have intuitively known this would happen and taken measures to either prevent it, or even better, to use the unknowing Fredo in a way to make their plans backfire. I'm only guessing of course. I wish Mario Puzo was here to ask 😃

@@donarthiazi2443 l just don't believe Vito would kill his own son. Michael went too far. Fredo was genuinely sorry for what he'd done. The fact Fredo wasn't too bright and was coerced is why Michael should have dealt with him differently. If Michael had keep him close l believe Fredo would have done anything for him at that point to retain his brothers love. You could tell Michael's hug was everything to Fredo.

He would have just sent him back to Italy. Vito was many many things but wracking his own son? Even when the kid fkd up and let dad get shot, dad never once blamed him or hated him. And Vito could never look his wife in the eyes ever again. She'd never forgive him.

This scene, and the one in the glass-room, when Fredo reveals to Michael his terrible wrongdoings against his own family, and, in so doing, signing his own death warrant, show probably some of the best acting ever performed in movies, or any other medium for that matter.

Vito nearly died on Fredo's watch , he did not punish him He would not have killed him , he would have given him the look after the assignation attempt, and kept him even closer. Then a small one way conversation would have fixed Fredo. After that , his communication would have been negligible but enough for fredo to simply be glad he was alive
