Lara's the only archaeologist in gaming who can survive the cold, harsh environment in a sleeveless crop top and booty shorts. Nathan Drake wishes he could pull that off.

If Eidos had remembered to market this it would have slayed so hard. It's objectively their most well-made game from that era (even though Legend will always be my personal favourite) and the most "Tomb Raider" game they ever made. But there was 0 marketing for this, literally nobody knew it was coming.
@Andrew_TSКүн бұрын
Plus you initially couldn't purchase it for then current-gen consoles on its own. The 360 version was released as DLC for Legend before getting its own standalone release. Episodic dlc, too. wtf?!

@@Andrew_TSThat's true. Some very weird decisions made. Not to mention that, since it was a last-minute decision, it took resources out of Underworld's development

How so? Eidos marketed the shit out of this game. I explicitly remember how hard they were going trying to promote this one. They even released it day one on Gametap way back in the day.

I remember reading that Core (the original developers of the Tomb Raider games) wanted to create a remake of Tomb Raider 1 but Crystal Dynamics snagged the rights from them so they were going to make one instead. I also read how spiteful some of the devs at Crystal Dynamics were towards Core in a bunch of old interviews and forum posts.
@RybatGrimes10 сағат бұрын
They were very spiteful around this time in general. The entire reason they made this game was to spite Core. As you said, core was going to make their remake for the PSP, most of it was already done. But once Crystal caught wind of it, they threw together something and convinced Eidos to keep it with Crystal. They made so many snide remarks about the original in the games commentary. They also made the “classic” outfit monstrosity, which is a total slap in the face of the original model. They could’ve just USED the original model, but instead, they made a really cartoony, and ugly version of it, just to be jerks. I genuinely can’t get past the history of this game to enjoy it. Knowing all of this really spoils the game for me. (Which isn’t much, because this game is still far inferior to the original.)

The Legends Trilogy is what got me into Tomb Raider, and Underworld is still my favorite TR game period. I would love to see this trilogy come to the Switch.

Okay. What are the odds here? I've had Tomb-Raider : Anniversary in my backlog for months. I started playing it two days ago. (On the Poseidon puzzle in St. Francis' Folly) and here Matt is raiding tombs in the same game! Edit: For anyone playing this on PC, please for the love of your sanity turn on v-sync! The game has serious problems if you leave it off.

Still crazy to think that Rhianna Prachett (daughter of Terry) was a writer for Tomb Raider games. She wrote a few of the Dark Horse comics about it, which were pretty good That particular dino from King Kong was called V. Rex (Vastatosaurus) btw

This got me thinking about remakes, specifically, what was the first ever video game remake? Was it Super Mario All-Stars?

That sounds right. Maybe Super Castlevania IV?

It gets kind of weird the further back you go. Old PC games in the 80s and early 90s were getting remade left and right. You had to because what we think of as ports couldn't exist due to hardware differences. You'd get a game on like a ZX Spectrum completely rebuilt from the ground up for the commodore just so you could have a version on that machine. Japanese PCs were all over this stuff. I'd recommend a channel called Basement Brothers and their PC-88 series for examples. But essentially it was super normal for a game to start on a PC-88, or the MSX or whatever and over the course of a year or so be completely remade multiple times, like new graphics, gameplay and design changes, done by a different company, etc, just so that you could sell it on the other platforms. Something like Lode Runner, or even Oregon Trail, is remade a zillion times because it's a total remake on each new platform it releases on by necessity. So there's really no hard dilineation. Ports used to be full remakes by sheer necessity. And yes that means significant version and content differences at times. All Stars is really that exact kind of "remake". Tldr; I suppose the modern concept of a remake only really arrived after technology kind of solidified enough across platforms in such a way that you actually had the option to release the same code and graphics across multiple platforms and porting became less an act of remaking the game entirely. After that happened then fully remaking a game was a seperate project, a choice to be done or not later on, rather then just a way to sell a version on new hardware. Or another way to go is to find a early game that was released on a platform, then was remade and rereleased on THE SAME platform. (So like Tie Fighter I think? Or Maniac Mansion?) That'd surely unambiguously count as a modern remake.

Incidentally, Tomb Raider Revelations (4) was the Egypt one. It took place all over the country, though, not a single temple or pyramid. It also had Creepy Young Lara, but just for the introductory tutorial level.

Actually playing TR1 Remastered at this very minute. The T-Rex was super easy in this version because you can hide in a cave and cheese him from a safe distance. I made it to the Coliseum just now, and damn, that Pierre guy in one annoying bastard.

In Chronicles one of the flashback stages has young Lara on the Black Isle in Scotlan, if I remember rightly. Had it on Dreamcast, but never finished it.

I wasn't a huge fan of Underworld, but really enjoyed the rest of the Legends continuity series. The gameplay was smoother with more complex control options, they extended plots and characters beyond a single game, and Lara occasionally had someone to talk to. I like how they made Larson a sypathetic character and Lara's first human kill. I'm not sure about starting up a FOURTH continuity, though, not after just giving Lara her pistols and giving her a good setup for new adventures after the animated series. Maybe if you combined all three into a single continuity with characters from all three previous versions...

The Legend trilogy are some of the very few games I can't play because the way the camera constantly swings around actually makes me sick. I wish I could enjoy these games, cause the little I did play of them were actually fun.

It’s sad that the Legends trilogy kinda fell into obscurity because I personally thought they were fun. And also, when they do bring back Tomb Raider, I hope they bring back quippy Lara! I don’t wanna see unsure, untested and insecure Lara, I want seasoned Lara who knows who she is and faces danger with a light quip and guns a-blazin’ 😺

So long as I can do aggressive stealth kills in a Tomb Raider game where I'm quickly moving to each guard taking them out in silence, I'm happy =) One of things I enjoyed in Rise of the Tomb Raider, just moving fast but quietly to each guard and just giving them the business end of a ice pick or an arrow to the dome lol

I love thid game, I have played it a lot. The only thing that annoys me every time is that the guide has a single line in spanish and it's wrong . He says "No traje bastante cuerda" which translates to "I didn't bring quite a bit of rope", it should be "suficiente"
@TevorTheThird15 сағат бұрын
I wouldn't have minded them trying again with reboot Lara. I straight up never touched the third one, so let me know if they f'd up something irrevocably in that game, but I loved the first one. It set a great baseline as an origin story. Then they kept banging the "become the Tomb Raider" nonsense with the sequels. If instead they just did a game where that Lara is just now her fully formed, duel pistol wielding self going on a Tomb Raiding adventure? That could be great! But three games of an origin story (again I didn't play 3 but it was still being marketed as such) was too much. The first game established her perfectly well.

This game just pales in comparison to the original, and I don’t know if you brought up the other remakes of the time just to comment on the other remakes that were being done at the time, or if you were putting this on the same level of the other remakes, but either way, this “remake” does not compare to the Resident Evil 1 remake done at the time. Capcom actually cared about the source material and wanted to pay it respect. Crystal Dynamics were doing the entire opposite at the time. The entire reason this game exists was to spite Core design. They wanted to do their own remake for the 10th anniversary, and was going to release it for the PSP. Once Crystal caught wind, they threw something together and convinced Eidos to go with their project. It bit them in the ass though because Underworld suffered because of the time spent on this. This game is just so poorly done and was so rushed. The characters are watered down, the game design is basic and they ruined a lot of levels by trying to add to them. With the remasters that exist now, there just isn’t much of a reason to go back to this one. It’s dusty and forgotten for a reason, lol.

Oof. This remake was so bad. Changed the platforms to ledges, removed Lara's independence and confidence, threw in quick time events, and added randomized grabbing fails.
