I went thru riggers school in 1960 and went to the fleet (Marine Corps). We had to make at least one jump and to make sure the chute was packed the way you wanted , you packed it. I was one of the lucky ones that went back as an instructor in "B" school. I was still a rigger when I retired in 1980. Semper Fi riggers

Was a Navy PR (aircrew survival equipmentman) in a VP Squadron. Had PLF training throughout school, also had to pack and jump in 83 at Lakehurst. Packed and inspected quite a few NB-8’s, SV2’s, Life Rafts, Fire Bottles, O2 Masks, etc. Wasn’t a bad job, had its perks, not much opportunity for a PR in the civilian world if you’re not a lifer though.

Went to PR-A school at Lakehurst in 1965. We all had to jump once at 3000 feet, pack your own chute free fall. Class Senior PO and Marine Marching PO got to make a 2nd jump. If you were assigned to the Paraloft after graduation there was a possibility of more jumps. I know because I did.

I know this is a old video, but I'm in the Navy about to come off my limdu orders and have been looking at other rates to choose from after being dropped from Aircrew. I'm interested in AME but there are little to no videos or references from sailors that work in the Aviation Structural Mechanic Safety Equipment rating. PR seems the closest but I was wondering if you can ask an AME to be on and talk about work life.

You said the MOS school is in Pensacola, FL. is this navy and marines only? I went through Army Parachute Rigger school at Fort Lee, VA in 1988. At that time the army required that a rigger complete the basic parachute course before starting the 3 months of the parachute rigger course. An Army Rigger must also be on jump status to even be able to do his/her job. An army parachute rigger's MOS motto is "I will be sure always". Never slack for a moment thinking your buddy checking your work will catch your mistakes. What if he is thinking the same about you? This job is about as serious as they get, even in peacetime. Lives DO depend on it. Cargo drops can also be deadly. A bad exit on some heavy drops can easily crash aircraft like a C-130, or destroy a tank in free fall. And maintenance is just as serious as packing since parachutes do need to be repaired sometimes. We did call the riggers in maintenance "stitch bitch" for laughs though. I was in an air-drop unit so we packed our units personnel chutes, cargo chutes, and prepared equipment for airdrops and low altitude parachute extraction system (LAPES). at least one qualifying jump during a consecutive three-month period is required to be on jump status, and it gets you jump pay too. Riggers will wear the maroon beret worn by airborne units, basic parachute badge (jump wings), rigger badge, and a MOS specific red ball cap "red hat" when working as a rigger. This army MOS also can lead to Warrant Officer school, and not every MOS does. Parachute badges also have levels including basic, senior and master wings. And there is Jumpmaster personnel inspection (JMPI) training, HALO parachuting and rigging courses, air assault and pathfinder are also possible once you have experience, but you need to be proactive with your training and be a high speed airborne paratrooper. Fuckups aren't welcome. Edit: there will be opportunities to do some very rewarding things like airdropping food and supplies to remote disaster stricken areas. And opportunities to parachute with other countries and earn their parachute wings and wear one foreign wings on your dress uniform. This usually requires you jumping from their aircraft with their Jumpmaster and getting it recorded or certified. Keep a record of all your jumps. Your records of 5 jumps from basic parachute course and two more during army parachute rigger course will automatically be put in your records file. recording night jumps, water jumps and jumps with combat equipment are important to earn your senior parachute badge. Heavy equipment drop and static line parachute jumpers kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHqYZKKJo857qKc LAPES kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZipZnd_ettrfM0 Foreign Jump Wings kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6rMoaeMgZWshdE

PRs don't jump anymore due to a female PR student hitting the ground in 1980. Until then nearly all the gold wings were worn by PRs. However the gold rigger wings were originally issued for graduation of PR school, not for merely jumping. Anyone can fall out of the sky. Being a PR is a great responsibility. Never forget that. Always be sure.

Shipping out w parachute rigger march 28 2022. One of the requirements is that I have to go to jump school before doing the rigger thing. Also before they allow you you need those gold wings so that’s more than just jump school. I don’t know if it was different a year ago when this comment was made, but that’s where I’m at right now with that job. @FieryVigil

There's a few reasons that it's hard to find out about sonar. Almost all of what you learn from the beginning of "A" school to the end of your multiple other schools is secret material. Sonar just isn't really a thing that people can talk in detail about because everything can be pieced together into a picture of how our equipment and strategies work, giving other navys an advantage. Also, it's a small community, not very many people are interested in sitting at a console on watch listening to dolphins and watching screens. Not that this is all you'll do, mind you. Sonar techs are the only people I know of in the navy who own and work on all of their own equipment. You can choose to sign up normally for 5-6 years, that extra year being to make up for the additional training to be a tech rather than an operator. That said, everyone does maintenance, and your job will be split between that and operating a console while on watch. You will have some of the roomiest spaces on any ship for people to stash whatever your command will let you get away with (hammocks, xbox, etc.) and you will have a good bit of free time relative to some other rates who have a heavier workload. It's a real slow job most of the time because you have nothing down there to see but when shit happens it happens quick and some of the most junior people on this ship are running these consoles and they are standing between the ship and a possible torpedo. STG is (sometimes) affectionately said to mean: "Sleep time guaranteed" and "Ships tour guide" because most of the ship doesn't have to deal with what happens in sonar till the keel explodes and the bow and stern start sailing different directions, in which case they may rightfully blame us. People can be tracking some sub down there that they've been looking for the whole deployment and then that goes on for days or weeks on end and the way they turn over their watch is tapping the guy laying next to the console and waking him up, then taking his spot on the deck and getting some Z's. That's not normal by any means but many people think that the headphone jockeys don't have anything to do down there. Something cool is that when you, the little E1-E3 operator, need to alert the ship to something, everyone important from the bridge to CO's cabin can hear you, so you make sure your prepared to make it sound good. Not gonna lie, the training pipeline sucks because it takes so long and you can be in the navy for going on two years and still be treated like you just got out of boot camp, wasting time and energy with things that don't matter or exist at all in the fleet, and then be new all over again for a while on the ship. We used to have dream sheets, not anymore. We used to let the top of class in "A" school and subsequent schools pick what duty station to go to, not anymore. If you ask to go to Norfolk or Japan you'll probably get it though because they're huge bases. Also, the recruiter won't tell you this because they either don't know or don't want you to know but automatic advancement for advanced tech rates like (6year) STG contracts doesn't mean you get your advancement right after graduation of whatever school. It means that when you satisfy the time in rate for E4, and you've graduated said school, you get it with some paperwork and no exam. STG is 100% to E4 anyways but you don't have to hassle with the test and you don't have to wait for results or anything so you get paid sooner. Not a bad rate, I'd say. Every one has their ups and downs.

The USMC 0451's are considered to be volunteers. They do not initially get contracted into this field as a recruit. It's rare to find a guy in the para-loft who would say, "yeah I signed for this job".

@@thestudmuffin5727 you can be in any MOS prior and volunteer for 0451. It starts with a conversation with the unit’s career advisor and asking to lateral move to 0451. I have former mechanics, tankers, aviation, and food service Marines who then lateral moved to 0451.

@@thestudmuffin5727 Ask your recruiter for 0451 Air Delivery Specialist, you gotta be really good with PT. In order to be in Airborne you have to score well with both USMC PFT and the Army PFT. Work on your run time and also do plenty of push ups and pull-ups. Yes I'm a 0451 Marine

@@thestudmuffin5727 Im not saying there’s no direct contract for 0451 but it is rare for recruiters to enlist a first termer as one. I do have few Marines who are contracted in but they were PT studs. Well, most of us are PT studs here simply because we’re competitive for all the cool schools we go to. Jumpmaster, Freefall School, Freefall Jumpmaster, HRST master, SERE, and Pathfinder.

PR is the most important job in the military because you get zero credit and all the responsibility. Be prepared for the expectation of perfectection and absolutely no respect.

BigTex182 by the nature of the job they have to at least be airborne qualified... weather they get to jump or not would be up to their command is my guess. No problems getting jumps in the army if you’re in a airborne unit.

I would have certainly liked a representative but our school is in Virginia and we did have marines there but the only sailors were going through a separate program and we never interacted. They were always dealing with zodiacs (those seal rafts). So it kinda seems a lot different to me. Ft Bragg 09-13. 647th QM.

Not only underrated but our gold PR wings were stolen by jealous Marines, SEALs, etc. Before they were everyone's "jump wings" they were called Certified Parachute Rigger badge (1942-1968) and you had to go to PR school to get them. Now it's no longer a requirement. #PRHistory
