Being born poor is only your starting point in life not your fate. I have seen what my father in-law achieved, he was orphaned the second time at age 13, as his adopted parents died, and yet he put all 4 of his children through university, 2 of them with Australian universities.

100% agreed. I have subscribers who come visit me and bring tools, clothing and electronics that they don't have use for anymore to donate and I disburse them to the local filipino community

When I go to the village in northern Luzon my wife is from I always take my old phones, tablets, computer parts etc with me. I find someone who truly needs them on the first day I arrive. They do have shops to buy them from but they are too expensive for the majority to be able to afford. Full disclosure, my wife and her family are among 'the haves', she is a senior university professor and her 4 children all own land, multiple large homes each, and condos in Manila, have university educations and government jobs, they are more wealthy than me. Her older brothers and sisters are even more wealthy than my wife's side. They do work very hard for what they have, but they started several generations ago with far more than the average. She (and they) don't really understand why I care about the welfare of those less fortunate but I grew up in poverty in my own country, I escaped the poverty trap because at the time my country had a free higher education system, my wife and her extended family have never known what it is to live in poverty. My wife's family will complain about the daily cost of day labourers, yet they will go out to restaurants in their convoy of 8 4x4 cars and spend easily 5 -10 times more on a single meal just so they can socialise with the local senior police, army generals, politicians, bank managers etc. Who owns 3 out of the 4 hotels in town where they always have these get-togethers? My wife's cousin. Who supplies all the meat, vegetables and salad to those hotel restaurants? Her 2 sons. In the Philippines the rich only marry the rich usually, they don't mix with the less well off. There is no 'trickle down economy' it is a fallacy. They insist you need a university masters degree to work as a waitress or a cashier in a supermarket. I know what LJ is talking about when she talks of the 'bullying' of the poorer section of society, I've seen it, I've heard how they talk about them. The ridiculous amount of bureaucracy is designed to weed out the less well off and poorly educated. My experience is that they only need a hand to reach the first rung of the ladder, a chance to escape the poverty trap, after that they will climb out all by themselves and pull the rest of their family up with them. In the west we spend more on takeout food per average person than it costs for university education in the Philippines. This KZbinr has exactly the right approach, help those who can reach that first rung of the ladder the soonest. When I go I spend my time improving the homes of those who can't afford to fix electrics, water supply and constantly leaking roofs and flooding, I can do more with my two hands than I can with money. A small solar panel and a couple of light fittings, cheaper than a large pizza in any western city, can literally change their day to day existence. No foreigners ever talk of the hotel, bar and club owners (who are often foreigners themselves) scamming or fleecing the tourists, those establishment owners are not poor. The Filipinos who own the land those hotels, bars and clubs are on are making huge profits charging extortionate rents, which pushes up the price of land for homes for the less well off Filipinos. In the 1980's the Marcos government decreed that local indigenous peoples weren't making the land profitable enough, so they took the land and gave it to those who had the money to make it more profitable, my wife's family were some of the one's who benefited from 'free land' and they hold the same opinion now of those who 'squat' on land they don't make big profits from. My wife is very proud of her eldest son, he works very hard. He has a good government job and on the land he inherited from his father he has made a hydroponics farm, where did he get the roughly $250,000 USD to buy all the irrigation equipment, support structures and plastic sheeting? Interest free loans and 'pay us back when you can' loans from the rest of his family. Almost every time he gets a little drunk he tells me about the time his father (passed away 5 years ago) got drunk and 'sold' one of his government allotted plots of land taken by the Marcos government, big enough to feed a family and build several houses on, for 2 bottles of beer and a pack of cigarettes. He thinks it is really funny. Everything costs more because tourists pay more, day labourers, housemaids and tuk tuk drivers, and fishermen, can't afford those prices, Filipino men are not lazy, they just can't hope to be able to out-spend foreign tourists and ex-pats because they get a pittance from those who have the money. Save for the future? A pipe dream. Who do you think owns all that valuable real estate? I'll give a clue, my wife and her circle know most of them. Is it any wonder they do nothing to stop the exploitation of the poorer members of society? Alcohol, including named brands, is ridiculously cheap by western standards in the Philippines. A 500ml bottle of the locally produced gin is USD $1.20 retail and a litre of most named brand spirits cost less than USD $8 - 10 retail, go to any supermarket outside of the tourist traps, you'll see. The bar and club owners make big profits from selling alcohol alone to tourists, they don't need to sell the country's poorest young women as well, but they do. They haven't got it down to the fine art they have in Thailand where much the same situation exists, but they do extremely well. The stark contrast between those who have and those who don't living literally next door to each other in a country with no safety net and no minimum wage can bring tears to your eyes. My wife and her social circle share the same attitude many foreigners express, but surely no-one can make the accusation that children born into poverty don't work hard enough, don't deserve to be cared about.

Fantastic interview. I can't wait for part two with Gerico. it's incredible to take being bullied and decide to turn it into a career to find out why people act like that. The locals I assume right out side of their neighborhood judge and bully them I imagine solely on assumptions without taking any time to even talk or get to know them. You took us into their neighborhood and shared how friendly and normal they are. I will also say to grow up in those cramped surroundings with so many people in such a small place and get an academic scholarship is incredible and LJ must be one smart determined young lady.

Honestly, I have never met a psychologist or psychiatrist who was not not bullied in some form growing up or didn't go through a traumatic event in their life. I have met many of them through a clubhouse of the m.lly disabled I used to work at. They all had stories to tell about their past. My own ex, a psychologist, went to a religious "private school" and she was bullied there, which was a surprise to me. It was the "my father owns a pharmaceutical company and yours is simply an executive of a food processing plant" type of bullying, but somehow it affected her all her life. She was never "in the group" and was treated horribly by her classmates.

As someone who grew up poor in a family of 6 kids, I fully understand as the bullying is something that many kids in that situation has to deal with. Thankfully, I chose the military, which got me out of that and showed me the world and showed me that even in my situation growing up, these kids have dealt with worse and have overcome it. May their future paths be paved with golden opportunities. Thank you Derek for all of what you do, and hopefully i get to visit you when i get in country. Keep up the great work.

Before I migrate here in the U.S. when I was younger, I'd experienced bullying by my neighbors as well. B'coz my Dad's job is only a fishermen. And 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) we always had rice and fish, every single day. My Dad cannot afford to buy meat. These 2 seem like wonderful people.We were poor when I was a kid but my best friends family was like 9 kids dad only working farming for poverty level wages poor . They lived about 1/4 mile from us and my parents didn't want me going there to play but every chance I got to sneak over I was there with them because they were a happy family mine wasn't alcoholic dad and all that . Like I said we were poor but my family looked down on them because I guess so they could feel better about themselves from my point of view then and now there my other family I still refer to my 9 other brothers and sisters and my other mom and dad not by blood but by love

My fiancé niece who is the same name LJ (Liv Jewel) had a classmate who wasn’t able to go to school for several years and thus was 6 years older than the other classmates. I decided to sponsor that classmate for lunch, transportation and school supplies. I had to stop because this classmate started to bully my fiancé niece. This lasted quite a while because she was to ashamed to tell me.

nothing like it at all. In the caste system, they are taught by their parents they belong that way. It is that Hindu mindset of "You were reincarnated into this body because you need to learn more for the next life." I don't see that in the Philippines at all. I do see people looking down at others but I have never seen a family tell their kid that they must submit to such a system. Instead I see them encouraging their kids to rise above where they came from. LJ's parents should have done better with her early on to explain the world can be ugly but God is not and wants good things for her.

Wow. I wish both of these young people the best as they chase their dreams. Women like this is why men in the West want to find their significant other in SE Asia. LJ is extremely attractive (I'm sure your inbox has blown up with meeting requests Lol), doesn't act like "she is the table", and she's resilient in the face of adversity. I hope I get the chance one day to meet a woman like this who's maybe 5-10 years older than LJ. Neighborhood bullies are real. My sister's next door neighbor's are horrible. They think they are a higher social caste. They built their house nicer a couple years ago, added second story. Very stuck-up, think they are better than others. They start bad gossip about our family. Recently, a new road was paved and it caused sister's house to flood badly in moderate rain. So my wife and I rebuilt it. We gave roof away to more poor. We raised up all walls to make a second story. Lot is small, we poured enough concrete to raise ground level above street. We spent $7,000 and built a badass 2 story in 5 weeks. The ugly neighbor kept insulting progress, saying "Watch them run out of money" to neighbors, behind our backs. I admit, that pissed me off and probably caused me to spend a couple extra thousand, lol. They demanded we build a wall between houses - fuckin A right, built 15foot tall block wall and made our side smoothed with stucco. Just that wall was 30,000 peso in material alone, hahaha - they didn't expect that. They have to look at raw block on their side - they cannot touch the wall to change it. We put tile in house, refrigerator, gas stove, soft, stateside style couch & chairs, 50" TV wall mounted, beds, frames, dressers. Bullying has stopped last few weeks. Their house is not as nice or as well furnished & no tile floors. All people in Neighborhood ask to tour house and give great compliments. It feels good and gives our sister great self esteem. She can walk to sari-sari or Magic Star with head held high - FTW!

@@qadventures - Sister in law who we built house for lived with us in Angeles City for 4 years and took care of all household chores (wife made me let go the cute 20 year old one I had, hehehe). Before we left for US, sent her to Lorraine Tech to learn seamstress & bought her nice machine. We left, she went back home & took care of both parents next few years - I promised her we would always take care of her the rest of her life. That's why went so crazy building her the house of her dreams. She had never been in a house that nice, let alone lived in one & own it. Changing lives is power. You feel just as good as the ones you help, win-win. Keep up the good work. Try to learn Tagalog at least, makes a huge difference in your experience. I became fluent in speaking, reading & writing. Filipinos look at you with a different kind respect, other than being a foreigner - and they feel more at ease.

Hi Derek, I think LJ is smart but I do question getting a psychology degree, is their a market for this degree in that country, my ex daughter-in-law has a Psychology Major with a Masters and it never took her anywhere here in the states, now my son, her ex got his Computer science degree and he is 6 figures here in the states, my son calls them throw away degree's my oldest son is also involved with computer architecture but he is working in Singapore now and he always made more than his brother. This is my advice to people living over sea's, don't get throw away degree's some degree's can get you into the states under our visa laws that allow for highly educated people
