A scene of two women at the hair salon descends into the parasocial and the paranoid. Featuring switchblade sharp writing by Harold Pinter, great performances by Anne Bancroft and Yootha Joyce, and claustrophobic lensing by Oswald Morris.
Bancroft was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. She won Best Foreign Actress at the BATFTAs, with Pinter and Morris clinching Best British Screenplay and Best British Cinematography - Black & White.

A harrowing scene from an under-appreciated film. In ‘64 the focus was on “Mary Poppins” and “My Fair Lady.” I’d take “The Pumpkin Eater” any day of the week!
