The editor went to Oda about a week before the Shabaody arc started and asked for a few more characters to be added so readers would know where Luffy stands in relation with other Rookies. And so the 11 Supernova were created. Oda just found creative ways to integrate them into his ideas moving forward. Well, all of them except Urouge who kinda just made a few cameos, but didn't really do much in the story yet. He probably will be a secondary character in the story after the current arc though.

The Celestial Dragons, the Navy, the Warlords; the whole shebang. To which Luffy replied that it should; he's only been picking fights this whole trip. *_That crazy S.O.B. knew what he was doing the WHOLE TIME!_* 😱 That was the moment that made me realize that while yes, Luffy is very much a free-spirited person who is far more of a big picture guy than a detail-oriented planner, he actually DOES have a plan. Apparently, he's not as think as we nuts he is. 😳

The 'face off' with Kaido's attack, the argument about who gets which direction or the being baited into going down the waterfall? They're all great moments. XD I just love straight-man dynamics with the crew. And reactions to them. Just... everyone thinks this crew is full of strong-ass serious pirates and then they meet them and go "wtf... wtf... WTF?!" because the gremlins have been let loose and don't let any of them kid you, they're ALL a problem.

But I think that's pretty normal in story writing but planned story's that were carefully designed from beginning to end get unnecessarily glorified. I think Oda is a genius at matching spontaneous ideas with established details of his work. It ends up creating a feeling of a vast and planned work without having to give up the aspect of, guys I just had this cool idea what if... The important aspect is being aware of continuity and checking to make sure those aspects don't conflict with what you wrote in the past.
