Marine isn't just a job for Garp. It's basically who he is and who he has been for the last 5 decades. Ignoring or betraying his duty as a marine is probably the same as him denying his whole life and himself.

Give me a break. A marine? Where was his sense of justice when his protege was out there murdering people under Sengoku's order in Ohara? Where was his sense of justice when marines were protecting a fucking slave auction that he laughed at? Garp is a fucking hypocrite of the highest order. He has no right to be preaching justice and defending his inaction by saying that he is a marine is just a pathetic excuse. He is a pathetic man who hasn't done any good in his life, hasn't changed the system that is systematically evil but goes around preaching to people about justice when he himself doesn't stand for it unequivocally.

A major recurring theme in One Piece is this concept of a Found Family. We Saw it with Nami's Backstory, with Sanji's backstory, Chopper's backstory. hell, even the Straw Hats can be considered a Found family to everyone whos Joined. You have to remember, Garp has always been a Marine. He Was chasing pirates for decades before Ace and even Luffy were born. This isn't some black and white situation where "marine bad" "pirate good" applies. We are seeing the world from the Straw Hats Perspective. Even Luffy acknowledges other pirates aren't good people. The Straw hats definitely are the odd ones out here. To the world as a whole, Pirates are seen as the bad guys. And most of them are. They pillage, they raid, they steal, they kill. And Garp spent most of his life defending the people from Pirates. And during his time in the marines, these Marines became his family. They were his found family. His brothers and sisters in arms. Sengoku and Tsuru being stated many times to be partners with Garp for years. They may not be related by blood, but this was Garp's family. They worked together, ate together, fought together. From the very beginning of Marineford, Garp was torn in his decision. To uphold his Morals and pride as a Marine soldier. or to betray everything he knew, to save Ace and Luffy. Grandsons whom he very much wished to have followed in his foot steps, and become upstanding soldiers like himself. As frustrating as it is to see Garp "stand" against his grandsons, you have to understand the dilemma hes having right now. and lets be real here... Considering White Beard is sick and very injured in this war. Garp is By far, the strongest being present at the Marineford war. and its Hardly close at his point in the story. If Garp really wanted to save Ace, he couldve. if Garp wanted to kill marco, he couldve. he held back, hoping someone would save ace. that was clear from the start

Justice my ass. He's been a marine for 50 years while marines have committed mass atrocities like wiping out entire islands out of existence. He has no right to be judging Luffy for not becoming a Marine when Marines are literal systematic evil in the One Piece world.

We often overlook that in the One Piece world, MAJORITY of pirates are BAD. Garp has been hailed the Hero of the Marines. GOOD NAVY looks up to him, he can't just run away from his position just like that. I understand why he is torn.

I think Garp is there as both a Marine and a grandfather. He sat with Ace, let him know how he felt, tried to give him every opportunity to ask for help. Ace wasn't going to ask, though, not Garp. He knows how important being a Marine is to Garp, and he wouldn't want to be the cause of him losing that. Taking a dive - Luffy couldn't even dent Garp at this point - was the last option to save Ace, something that Ace would accept. He knew the Marines were looking for Ace from before he was born. He hid him. Of course he couldn't stop his grandson from saving his other grandson. It's what he was hoping for.

Ace had enough of burden and if garp betrays navy to save him. Ace will feel more burdened. Garp knows that. Thats why he asked ace if its okay.

I think you don't really get it what is the Garp situation here. Bein a marine is not just a job, is is what who he is, marine is his family too and he belive in the justice, also in the same time Ace is a criminal and a big one also he don wanna be helped by Garp, if he asked for Garp help everything could go in a different way. You have to immagine the situation in real life, your granfather as a hero, one of the biggest man of the police force, a capitan who really fight for justice and belive in whst he is doing since 1976 and you a gangster, a right hand of the boss of your city. Is not do easy man.

Say what you want but Ace being the way he is is called stupidity in the real world, people have to remember this show is all about romanticism. People love calling Luffy stupid for putting his crew in danger but for some reason everyone thinks Ace is a saint and Garp is the bad one for whatever reason. Imagine having a kid and he comes up to you and just goes "I wanna join a gang" are you really going to be ok with that?
