There's a line that new watchers often miss but makes anime fans go crazy. When Mihawk first meets Luffy, he says something along the lines of "I expected a much more impressive man... but I do like your hat. " he recognized it as Shanks' hat, and that's probably the reason why he didn't just kill Luffy.
@Phanthief957 ай бұрын
That & also because Luffy intrigues him. The thing about Mihawk is that he’s incredibly bored. He’s the world’s greatest swordsman which means there’s not really anyone who can truly challenge him in a fight.

@SensiBurning907 ай бұрын
This is true. The maps that exist are mainly of the four blues and even those aren’t complete. But the grand line is mostly uncharted. It’s nearly impossible to navigate with traditional methods let alone map everything accurately.
@Phanthief957 ай бұрын
Not only that, but the whole world is completely separated from each other, not just socially but mainly geographically. The 4 main oceans of the world of One Piece are separated vertically by a massive continent known as the Red Line, & horizontally by the dangerous stretch of the ocean that the Straw Hats are heading to: the Grand Line. As well, what’s not mentioned in the live action is that the Grand Line is separated from the other oceans by two stretches of ocean on each side called the Calm Belt. In it, no wind ever blows & the weather is always calm, hence its name. It’s also suicidal to sail into the Calm Belt since that’s where the highest concentration of sea monsters are, most bigger than the one that bit off Shanks’s arm.
@IamGrimalkin6 ай бұрын
Well the size is just a fan-theory (although one with substantial support) but it doesn't matter regardless. Making a map of the world by defintion requires finding both the island the One Piece is on and the All Blue. Nami's dream encompasses Luffy's and Sanji's.
@shinryouga7 ай бұрын
An important note: Chu, the fishman who spits water like bullets, would have been a major problem for both Sanji and Zoro, as neither of them have any way to effectively counter a bullet. If he had been allowed to stay at Arlong Park, an open space that he knows well, and shoot freely at the crew, the fight would have likely played out very differently. Usopp lowkey shifted the entire fight by drawing him off for a solo skirmish in the woods.
@falxonPSN4 ай бұрын
Yeah. This is a point that a lot of people seem to miss. There really was no one else that could fight him aside from maybe Luffy just based on brute force and the fact that blunt bullets would not do anything to him. Sure, Usopp got scared and ran, which is pretty understandable but he also took one of Arlong's top lieutenants out of the fight. That is certainly not trivial. And don't forget that he could have just played dead in the woods but he had the bravery to stand up and fight. I think it's pretty spoiler-free and evident at this point to say that usopp is a coward 95% of the time, but almost unmatched in his bravery the other 5%.

I've been a fan of One Piece since literally 1999, following each chapter and update and each episode week to week almost religiously since. I will be the first to say if you want complaints or concerns about the Live-Action I can write a whole dissertation on it. I'm far from saying I have no complaints about the Live-Action. But every episode has really blown me away at how much thought and effort was put into capturing the essence of what One Piece is. And the cast-off ceremony solidified it for me that this show really does, despite its problems and changes that they made, really beats with the heart of what makes One Piece special. Special Shoutout at 24:05 when they transitioned the original theme ("We Are") of the anime into the main theme of the live action. The person that made that decision deserves every raise in my book.

I loved this Adaptation. It was so well done. I have a few things I wish they did better, but overall a great job. My only Complaint with this Episode was they took out a bit of Usopp's fight. Otherwise, all well handled. I'm happy you guys enjoyed this so much!

If I remember this correctly (I'm not going to claim that I do), the actor playing Usopp is also a writer and was on strike for part of the filming of season 1. They had to cut some of his scenes due to that. Hopefully, they are able to restore Usopp's rep some more.
@Heklr77 ай бұрын
@sdaubs I see, I didn't have that context, but it makes sense. For sure, up until that point, Usopp just was a little annoying, if inoffensive. He had moments of Bravery followed by Cowardice, undermined by Bravery, following more Cowardice. But that moment when he was coming up with excuses to lie to his friends on why he wasn't able to take on the Fishmen and him cursing his own cowardice while doing something about it just made me more endeared to the character

The penultimate scene is what sold me on this portrayal of Shanks. I already liked how he played Shanks in the flashback scene in an earlier episode, but his joke in this episode is a live action original, it's not from the manga, and it capture the spirit of the character very well imo, and the actor portrays it well too. As for Arlong, we might get a better idea of who he was and why he was doing what he was doing but I seriously doubt he'll ever be redeemed. That being said (and this isn't about Arlong himself but more in general), One Piece is a world of pirates of varied moral stances with many parties with conflicting interests. A former enemy does not necessarily needs to be redeemed to team up with the good guys. You saw that with Buggy a bit here, his interests aligned with the Strawhat's for a bit so they helped each other in a small capacity (sure Buggy was more like a prisoner, but the SH did keep their promise to get him back to his body after he led them to Arlong), and Buggy isn't redeemed in any way, he's an asshole through and through and probably will always be.

Even if you guys don’t watch the anime you can always react to the fights during the East Blue saga, to see the ones they skipped and the ones they changed. Obviously Luffy vs Arlong. Sanji vs Kurobi the manta Fishman. His fight also had a portion where they fought underwater. Usopp vs Chu was a great character moment. When he played dead he was originally gonna run away, but he thought of how everyone was willing to die fighting back against the Fishman, he took a stand and continued fighting. And lastly Zoro vs Hachi an octopus Fishman who fights with six swords, they unfortunately had to cut out of the live action.

Zoro simply had to fight the strongest swordsmen of his time while Nami had to create a map of the world, Which is not possible as there is only 1 crew in the history of One Piece who has traveled through the whole world. One piece world is extremely disconnected which is why you see varying degrees of technologies and styles in the world. People mostly live in their islands and only pirates or Marines can travel. Live Action One Piece should have been a slam dunk… 180° in the wrong direction. The world Oda’s spent the last several decade meticulously bringing to life is many things; vibrant, vast, comical, bizarre, disturbing, inspiring, and above all, imaginative. Forcing such a wonderfully strange world into a form as limiting as Live Action always seemed to me an exercise in futility. And I’ve never been happier to have been proven so totally dead wrong. This show 1000% understood both the heart of One Piece’s writing, as well as the unique *strengths* a live action production has to offer. I’ve been a One Piece fan for many years, and I couldn’t be more delighted to say that this take has given me a whole new appreciation for these characters I already loved, by giving me a new way to fall in love with them. It’s maybe the best streaming experience I’ve had in years, and I cannot wait for Season 2! Having said all that, I highly recommend y’all check out the anime sometime, even if just on your own time and not for reactionary purposes. For all that I am sincerely blown away by just how well the series was adapted, just as the live action has its share of medium specific merits, the anime likewise has it’s share of advantages that make it a superb watch. I’d understand being intimidated, One Piece is one of the longest running series in the world after all, so if I could offer a smaller vertical slice, I at least recommend checking out the Arlong Park arc on the anime. Quite a bit had to be left out to squeeze within the live version’s smaller run, and the extra breathing room really is put to fell effect, to the point that even today Arlong Park us considered a fairly high watermark for the series. For many One Piece fans it was the arc that fully hooked them, and I hope one day it’ll hook you two, too!

One thing I have to say about the live action's take on Nami's "Help me." scene, the emotions weren't as high as they could have been. In the anime, its revealed that everyone, including Nojiko, were aware of Nami's deal with Arlong, and treated her badly, just to make her feel like she didn't have to save them. When they reveal it to her, she tried to tell the villagers she would still get the money, but they were ready to die for their freedom. This is what sends her into utter despair, and leads into the anime's "Help me".

If they follow the same ''power levels'' as in the anime, Garp wasnt even trying. Hes a vice-admiral with the powerlevel of an admiral or even bigger than that from what i have seen in the anime, and he even stated in the show he refused a promotion to admiral which means hes at least as powerful as one.

One character that was removed from Arlong's Crew is an octopus Fishman named Hachi who Zoro fights, and ends up being an important character later on.

One of the big things with Luffy's character is that he is free. But not only that, he is SO free that he inspires the people he meets to seek that level of freedom. And one of my favorite things with Usopp's character arc is his stated dream here. Because bravery isn't being fearless. its acting despite them. And with how fearful Usopp is, he is CONSTANTLY facing his fears and acting despite them. Usopp's dream of becoming a brave warrior of the sea is a lie. Because he already is one.

That wasn't wasn't an easter egg, that was a glorious promise for what's to come. Next season is gonna be the true test of how well anime can work as an live action, at least from how I see it. Though I have hope from what this season showed us and from what I learned from behind the scene stuff, the whole cast and beyond S-tier and I wouldnt have any other cast. Season two is gonna be awesome, I can feel it.

Since I doubt you guys will ever watch one-piece anime, I think it's fine to say that as much as I hate Arlong when we reach Fishman Island, I get where Arlong's hatred is coming from. It's not simply about "fishmen were enslaved". Humans still enslave them, treat them like disease, kill them, and invade their homes. Arlong has seen and faced this since he was born. Arlong's brother was a slave. Arlong's brother died because of humans even though his brother saved humans. Basically, Arlong has never seen the good side of humans from his childhood to becoming a grown man. What Arlong did to Nami and her village is nothing, but a reflection of what humans do to Fishmen. This is a literal reflection, not a metaphorical one.
@MoostachedSaiyanPrince7 ай бұрын
And as great as the live action is, the anime is better in every way other than being much slower paced. But the slower pacing often helps build both the characters and the world itself, so even that evens out IMO.

When Koby tells Luffy that he’s now got the biggest bounty in the East Blue, there’s a lot that you need to understand about that statement. The world is divided up into 5 major oceans: the four Blues (north, south, east, west), and the Grand Line. Further, the East Blue is known to be the safest, most peaceful of them all, and all the biggest players are in the Grand Line. So Luffy is still very VERY far from Pirate King level bounty. In the Grand Line you’ll be seeing pirates and criminals with bounties in the hundreds of millions, with the biggest players in the billions. At the moment Luffy is considered the biggest fish in a small pond. Nami’s dream to draw a map of the whole world is every bit as impressive and dangerous as Luffy becoming pirate king or Zoro defeating Mihawk. Remember, this is a world covered in an incredibly dangerous ocean thick with sea monsters, insane weather that defies logic, and crawling with psychos with powerful and bizarre devil fruits. Just sailing from one island to another is a life threatening trip, much less trying to find them *all.* Not to mention there’s one island that only the pirate king and his crew have ever made it to. If it were simple, tons of people would have gone already looking for the One Piece. Bethany, if you think they’re setting up Luffy and Shanks to have a reunion soon, hoooo boy are you going to be disappointed. Even in the manga current, with 1116 chapters, that reunion has yet to happen. They’re not meeting again for a long loooooong time so don’t get your expectations up too high for that. As much as I adore the live action and believe they made it incredibly well, this finale does have 2 major problems with it that ruin a lot of the emotions. The first is with Usopp’s fight against Chew, the smelt-whiting Fishman. When Usopp was playing dead, you may question why he didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to get a sneak attack in on Chew. After all, standing back up and announcing himself defeats the whole purpose of pretending to be dead. That’s because in the original, he didn’t play dead for tactical reasons, he did it out of cowardice. Once Chew started to leave Usopp began thinking of different lies to tell his friends, things like, “I fought as hard as I could, but I just couldn’t win,” and “I took out 20 when you weren’t looking.” But he breaks down in shame. He realizes that if he’s going to be a brave warrior of the sea, he can’t take the easy way out while his friends are genuinely putting their lives on the line. In that moment he resolves to stand back up and face his opponent head on, the *right* way, win or lose, even if he dies. It’s Usopp’s single biggest moment in the entire East Blue saga and losing that was a tremendous blow to his character. The second failure is in Luffy’s final speech to Arlong. Here he admits he can’t beat Arlong himself, but he can destroy everything he’s built. That’s almost the total opposite of his original speech. Arlong asks what Luffy hopes to accomplish and spouts off his fishmen superiority rhetoric about how lacking humans are. Luffy… actually agrees with him. Luffy admits there’s a *lot* he can’t do. He doesn’t know how to navigate. He can’t use a sword. He can’t cook. He can’t even lie. That’s why he needs his friends, to make up for all the stuff he can’t do. “But there’s one thing I *can* do, Arlong. Beat you!”
