Psalm 17 is a prayer by David in the Bible in which he asks God for deliverance and protection from his enemies. The psalm is thought to have been written during David's persecution by King Saul, and David describes his enemies as a ferocious lion. In his prayer, David:
Appeals to God's integrity
In verses 1-4, David insists that he is faithful to God and free from deceit or evil. He asks God to look at him and see that his life is right.
Begs for God's intervention
In verses 5-8, 13, David asks God to act as his savior and protect him from his enemies. He uses phrases like "apple of my eye" and "shadow of your wings" to describe God's tender care and love.
Compares his enemies to a lion
In verses 9-12, 14, David describes his enemies in detail as a plea for God's preservation.
Looks forward to future happiness
In verse 15, David comforts himself with the hope of one day beholding God's face.
