James Ward, aged 22, was given a 10 month sentence for causing actual bodily harm to his Dad in a fight over a dog. 12 years later James is still in prison after being given a highly controversial Indefinite Imprisonment for Public Protection sentence (IPP) having set fire to the bed in his cell.
VICE follow the lives of April, his distraught sister, who has campaigned tirelessly for his release and the rest of the family in the final 6 weeks before James' possible release date. With previous potential releases failing to materialise, the family are unsure whether they will ever see James out of prison again.
As the family describe what feels like their own sentences waiting for James’ release, VICE learns of the effect that the IPP sentence has had on both the prosecuted and their families. With IPP sentences no longer being used, James is one of the last people to face spending the rest of their life on parole with the threat of jail hanging constantly over them.

I’ve never heard of IPP before. Minimum sentences but no maximum? Minimum 10 years parole but no maximum? What a Charlie Foxtrot. Holy hell. If parole violations are as easy to catch there as they are in the U.S. it’s going to be really hard to keep out of trouble. I hope your brother is doing well. That is a difficult challenge to face.

Actually he had gone for 14 months first due to the punch then due to the arson charge in prison got him the 99 years, who knows what happened, it may have been him or some other prisoner who was jealous cause of him being released may have framed him. Some prisoners especially those with long sentences usually cause such things on prisoners with short sentences or if they know someone is being released out of spite!

Yes they will use any excuse if they want someone gone if the spirits had not helped me escape I would be in the mental hospital wrongly to this day with no release in sight from five years ago, They can do this to anyone they don’t need evidence they have all their pseudo science, Luckily they had not managed to manipulate me into “incriminating” myself just enough to get me back in there on an actual charge by the time I managed to escape the standard hospital before taking me to the mental hospital

Pay attention. Those who hold power are slowly creating a prison of a society. The companies fund lawmakers who set the rules for society. If you're deficient or can't keep up in society, you go to jail where you're essentially just a human asset for the prison industrial complex. The law makers, the lawyers, the police, the judges. The entire judicial system is set up, not to protect us, but to intimidate us into conforming into a society where they win and we get by or die. They manufacture crime. They squeeze harder, and as people fall through the cracks it means capital. Crime is money.

I watched a guy get released once, he has just finished a 18 month sentence for tax evasion, and when he got to the parking lot he was surrounded by state troopers and taken RIGHT back into custody, his wife and kids all standin there hysterically crying, the cops wouldn't even let him hug his fckn kids. You could see the guys spirit break, right there in that lot. He got another 18 month sentence for something else (non violent), and had to wait another year and a half to hug his kids. It always disgusted me that they couldn't even give him 5 minutes with his family in thar parking lot, that isnt justice, that's Evil. Period. (They don't tell you when this happens. They know from day 1 you won't be released on your release date, but they stay quiet on purpose. Its FUCKED up.) Freedom And Justice For All Who Can Afford It.

The missing bit of info is the Dad's statement to law enforcement. I'll bet my right nut the old man was that angry that he painted a very different picture to what he's saying to his family. Notice the initial statement the father made here about what happened and him saying to himself enough is enough. He tells a very different story infront of the family though, doesn't he. That's why the old man is carrying such guilt. I bet he DID call the police. He's lying to his family and himself at this point

Psychology, parole boards and prison staff influence and control the fate of IPP inmates...for example if a prisoner is in a bad mood and a vindictive officer ‘writes a bad comment on the inmates file’ that can have a detrimental affect wen the prisoner comes up for his parole hearing (meeting arranged for potential release) in James’s case he wasn’t a harm at all, pent up frustration and no release date to aim for would blow any ones mind and cause all kinds of mental health or frustration and stress..I sincerely hope your well James and I hope you read this would Love to hear how you are doing.

I really think his dad has suffered more than the kid himself, at the end of the day he punched his father. He deserved time, but not that amount. All these years his dad is the one who blamed himself, believed he failed him as a father, you can really see he is in pain. I hope he heals and the only one capable of helping him heal is his son. I wish them both a long and happy life, and hope they can heal and get past it all.

People who are actually dangerous get way less than a kid who punched someone in a fit of rage. Get the kid mental help, don't throw him in jail. The justice system is so broken. I hate the fact that 1 person (the judge) can basically ruin your life for no reason). I can just imagine the jury saying he's guilty and the judge goes "99 YEARS BUDDY, MATTRESSES ARE PRICELESS!"
