Well done! This was a perfect example of how overdoing AC against a dynamic encounter does not mean invincibility. I had so many debates with people on this, and every bladesinger I have ever created encounters for with 30+ ac just gets dropped, due to overconfidence at close range...and not factoring anything else other than melee attacks. This was fun to watch...the raptor packs were great! I still think summoning needs to be changed moving forward with future editions, but the macro really helped not slowing down the game play.
@chrisvossler87952 жыл бұрын
I remember Monty calling that out during one of their videos: if you're a dungeon master and can't figure out how to get a hit on the party tank, just take a look at his saving throws. And sure enough, Kelly was making saving throws practically every turn!

bladesingers are an extreme example because they are ... brittle? might be a good way to describe them? I mean, mage armor +5dex+5int+2bracers, 25 standing AC, but if ANYTHING gets through that, it will pretty much 1shot you

This reminds me why I've been eyeing the shield master feat on my tank builds. Even though they were reducing the lightning bolt damage to half or a quarter with resistance, it still was whittling them down quite a lot. Evasion is of course better, but not really as easy to get. It's like a partial mix of the monk/rogue tank builds into the more standard ones. The campaign I am currently in has been one where I never get hit by attacks (swords bard 3/hex 1), but get blasted by 2 lightning bolts in between a single turn going from full health to nothing even with successful saves. Warcaster can wait, I'm gonna have to pick up the shield master feat to survive (especially since there is a dragon fight in our not to distant future).
@kristiandahl13102 жыл бұрын
That gives me an idea to fight hags once I'm out of spell slots reserved for absorb elements. My sword board is only a fraction less dmg than long bow and I'd keep my higher AC as well as give me that bonus evasion.

I’ve already watched twice, but I’m digesting the info from it more. Watching a third time now and man what a session!! Lots of funny moments and you guys did such an awesome job of keeping the combat fun when a lot of tables would’ve gone into number crunching seriousness to figure out the best way to survive. Absolute joy to watch. I must also say that I love the concept of the catch-22 build, but with cloud of daggers not doing as much damage as the lower level slot and them being immune to thunder it makes it prevalent that the catch-22 needs a backup option for sure. I understand why you took the 6 levels in paladin now with your guys’ conversations on team dynamic, but I think that you almost have to fight with cabe next to you to make it worth it now. I’m still very excited to see you guys play in the next session and see how you do. If you get to level before the dragon thy could be a game changer simply due to the better concentration options for yourself. Especially if Kelly hastes you again.

This one-shot already proved something important. Absorb elements and shield are the most important defensive reaction options of DnD 5e and silvery barbs doesn't get close to them. Barbs power is its offensive use though. I also played a battle Smith artificer with the sentinel feat and it was quite tricky to know when to use the feat instead of holding my reaction for the potential use of shield and absorb elements.

On my 3rd rewatch this weekend as i'm doing chores and i realized that you should've definitely pulled out your find steed for the fight and treated like a steel defender for majority of the fight. you could've rode on it to get close (kelly doesn't need to use vortex warp) and then dismount then let it make its own attacks/take a couple of hits (especially since it could've been buffed pre-combat with heroes feast, aid, etc). mounts imo are always a good idea, especially if you can make disposable ones. i think you guys also could've used alot of forgotten abilities like action surge, the advantage granted by silvery barbs, guided strike from conquest pal, the other non-cloud rune, etc. and just a compliment again, this might be the best dnd live play i've ever seen in terms of just enjoying the whole thing compared to critical role or even the stuff deborah ann woll comes up . those may have a better story and production value but this was generally more fun, relatable (as you guys are playing characters i would build) and the way monty structured encounters is the way my DM generally does as well. plus the humor was chef's kiss! good work everyone.
@DnDDeepDive2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I had Monty make a token for it and everything but then I was just like... Meh. Mounted Combat in 5e is just... yucky :). And every DM does it different, ya know? Controlled Mount? Independent? Do I get to direct it if I'm not mounted? etc etc. Plus I knew Chris was going to be summoning and Kelly had robodog... just didn't want to clog things up any more :).
@TheRobversion12 жыл бұрын
@@DnDDeepDive yeah personally i also don't do "mounted combat" in 5e. on my own conquest paladin i just use find steed typically on the 1st round as not being able to close the distance on round 1 makes you end up doing something ineffective like the toll of the dead. once i get to my target, i dismount and fight with my steed at my side as a "summon". this way, once you're unmounted the rules are clear. So yes JC has already clarified it works like any allied creature as soon as you're dismounted. so it's another "summon." things just go into confusing category if you are mounted. by just moving in and spending some of the mount's move and your move (dismounting will cost you half your move) it will keep the rules simple. it's just another summon who has it's own initiative and the way monty ruled it is that your steed would just take their turn after your turn just like chris' velociraptors. you don't have to worry about controlled/independent. I do the same with my beastmaster and battlesmith builds that need to get into melee (playing custom lineage: small for both builds). understandable though that you didn't want to clog up the field more. i think this is just retrospect because you didn't know before hand monty would come in with heavy aoe. anyway, part 2 cant get here soon enough! looking forward to it.

According to RAW, the wall of force on this episode wouldn't block misty step, as it didn't, since it doesn't use ethereal plane movement as it shouldn't have blocked conjure animals, for it targets unoccupied spaces that you can see within range. You don't throw a physical thing in that space to summon the creatures, as you do with, say, a fireball, nor the creatures go through the wall using the ethereal plane.

I really like it that you bring us into your considerations regarding the builds and party composition. I also think deciding that a Paladin is a nessecity is on spot. IMHO a more powerfull version of Paladin would be Watchers7/Warlock2/Sorcerer4. That would have provided a huge Initiative boost all around and give you a solid ranged option. Together with Find Steed, you could have had 120 ft movement per round to completely avoid melee and pepper the giants with Eldritch Blasts. The Sorcerer's Darkness spell would also shut down the giants' lightning attacks (and if you took Shadow Sorcerer, would also grant you advantage on your attacks and disadvantage on attacks made against you).

I would definitely say you can conjure animals on the opposite side of a wall of force, as there is nothing actually passing through the wall. While paralyze and similar effects are good at dealing with players, I won't use them anymore as a GM because it purely detracts from a players fun (fail save/do nothing your next turn).

Question for you. Do you regret choosing your Catch-22 over some of your other builds for this one-shot? In theory, it can do a lot of damage, but in practice, there are so many things that can nullify the potential damage, especially when you start getting into higher level monsters. It starts feeling gimmicky, just a one-trick pony. Immunity to thunder damage. Reach allowing it to attack you without moving. Ranged attacks that do a lot of damage. Cloud of Daggers is cool, but its 5 feet cube makes its usefulness pretty niche.

Fun video, good work to you all. Looking forward to 2nd session. Raptors=mvp. Storm giants can levitate above the raptors..i wonder how that would have changed the fight?
@googleaccount-lm9uz2 жыл бұрын
Levitate probably wouldn’t have been that advantageous. After the first giant levitated Dennis could have just switched to summoning flying creatures like giant owls. Those don’t have pack tactics so they would have hit less, but the giants only had 16 ac so they weren’t that hard to hit. Also, casting levitate replaces highly damaging actions for the giants so perhaps it would have been disadvantageous overall.

If so the Robotificer wouldn't have died (not that it made much difference since he was immediately Revivified), also, are Death Saving Throws made at the Start of your turn? Meaning on that Nat 20, Lin could have gotten up and had her full round of attacks?
