I am a beginner, and took my first sewing class at Joann's where I made a beautiful pillow. I was so excited and on top-of-the-world! Since making the pillow, I have been able to make several more with my sports team fabric. I have a friend who is expecting, and I am so looking forward to making her a set of "burp cloths". I find that "handmade" items are much more appreciated than "store-bought", already consumed by others of the same color, size, etc. You have made it so comforting to know that I really can sew if I just put my mine to it!!. I have purchased 4-showing machines in the past, and always had the intention to sew, but never got to it. With that said, I ended up either selling or giving the machines away. This last time, a couple of months ago, I decided I really was going to do it this time. I purchased my 5th machine, a Singer 3342, that was on sale at Joann's. I then took a few weeks before I signed up for a class, which was a blessing in itself because it was only myself and the instructor. 2.5 hour class, and I made a beautiful project. Thank you so much for sharing and your patience explaining this project.

I have been sewing for 47 years and NEVER thought of using "Elmer's" type glue for basting! I've used washable interfacing and "wash away quilter's tape".... i feel like i hit the jackpot with all the money I will be saving 😁😁👍

I attempted a dress as my first project but it was a total fail because I had no idea what I was doing haha. My first successful sewing project was a tiny little envelope pouch and I definitely used this technique to make it!
@SewingReport7 жыл бұрын
That's one of the biggest thing I like to tell beginners - don't go in over your head for the first few projects. If it ends up being a major fail, it won't encourage you to keep going. Although you totally managed to get past it!
@LizVonVillas7 жыл бұрын
That's a very good thing for them to keep in mind! I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to creative projects. If I fail, I try again until I get it right! I whipped that sewing machine into submission! If you happen to have any of your old sewing fails, that might be a fun video to encourage n00bs whom otherwise may be discouraged by your mad skillz. Maybe in your live show? "What was your biggest sewing FAIL?" Started from the bottom now we're here [insert photo of awesome make] :D

Before I turn at the corner, I always take 2 stitches on the diagonal and then I turn and continue sewing. After the corners are trimmed, I turn and use a knitting needle to make the points sharper. I also use a spray bottle to dampen the edges with water. It helps me to get the stitching out on the edge. Use the knitting needle and go all around the inside. If you are stitching a curve, make sure your stitching is in a perfect curve, with no stitches out of line. Clip by cutting inverted v's. Turn, dampen, and run your knitting needle inside. These are things I have learned on my own and I hope they work for you. They have always worked for me.
@SewingReport5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Ginger - I'm actually shooting a video right now with corners and am trying a few different things to get perfect corners. I'd heard of the method of taking a few stitches on the diagonal from a friend Denise Wilder but haven't tried it out until now.

Could you explain the walking foot?
@JudyHart14 жыл бұрын
Cecily 95 a walking foot provides feed to the top fabric, instead of just the normal feed dogs on the machine. This way, both layers of fabric goes under the presser foot at the same pace.
@barbaraann76106 жыл бұрын
Why 2.5 size stitches? Is the walking foot the regular foot?
@SewingReport6 жыл бұрын
2.5 is the default stitch on that sewing machine - you can select a different stitch length but I'd recommend making sure it's appropriate for the fabric type. With quilting cotton, I typically do between 2.0-2.5 and 3.0 or 3.5 for top stitching.
@barbaraann76106 жыл бұрын
Wow, you are so thoughtful to answer my question! I'm so impressed! Thank you so very much!
@snowypaws84945 жыл бұрын
What does the top stitch do?
@SewingReport5 жыл бұрын
A few things - closes up the opening, keeps the item from "shifting" by sewing it in place, and it's a more tailored finishing touch.
@snowypaws84945 жыл бұрын
Sewing Report oh thank you that makes more sense now

You're right--there's so many great applications for this technique! I love using it for baby quilts. I'm not a quilter, and even though I like adding bias binding to projects, this technique simplifies the process so much! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to add it to the sewing videos portion of the weekly feature post I do on my blog elizabethmadethis dot com called Sew Saturday Snippets.

Yes - sometimes it’s nice to make a baby quilt quickly and skip binding. I love the look of traditional binding but it does add more time.

What is top stitch?
@SewingReport5 жыл бұрын
Topstitching is a line of stitching designed to be seen on the outside of the garment and it can be either decorative or functional. Often, it's on edges of items like blankets or hems to help fabric stay in place.
