I wouldn't want to watch The Wizard of Oz, if it was in color all thenway through. The transition to colour was stunning.

One of the most beautiful sequences in black and white is the children in the boat through the marsh scene in Night of the Hunter.

It's nice to see Roger & Gene in agreement on something 👍!! It's also nice that whomever taped this show used a filter to soften the picture like they often did in the old B&W movies (and like they NEVER do in color movies &TV programs).

I also love black and white movies and TV. I have Inherit the Wind and Sergeant York both in black and white. The grittiness of war and rural Tennessee setting in both would not be the same in color. That's just two among so many. ....and is weird that I dream in color. Lol

In the 21st century it has been proving that if you dream in black and white, you owned a black and white TV. He says he dreams in black in white because that is the why his mind is trained. So, that dates this interview. Plus, he instantly pictures himself smoking (and probably drinking). Black and white did make cancer sticks look more glamourous in black and white, as did the drinks. I am not a lover of black and white movies. I am 75. One movie I prefer in black and white is the British TV movie of Wuthering Heights in 1964 with Ian McShane. The book is dark and brooding. This movie is the same. So, it is my fav of the WH movies and series. However, I saw the colorized Yankee Doodle Dandy, one week after the black and white. Except for the fact that they cut scenes to save money in colorizing, it was much better. In those days, the USA was bright and new and colorful. It became dull in black and white. It made Cagney pop along with the fireworks and dancers. I cannot imagine Star Wars in black and white. However, The Day the Earth Stood Still made the alien more menacing in black and white and the soldiers were drab anyway. We didn't get a TV until I was 6 or 7, so I was fine with it...thrilled. We, finally, got a color TV in Feb. 1975. WOW! Years later, when cable came alone, The Monkees and Partridge Family was much better in color. Perhaps there are some films that could get away with black and white today but they would be movies I would never watch in color. Yes, gangster films are better in black and white. And the same with TV shows. Comparing Twilight Zone and One-Step-Beyond, the black and white does give them an eerie feel. I have to disagree with clothing style. You can still see, in black and white, that the clothes are dated. And I do believe many producers and directors would have made movies in color if they could have afforded it at the time. Also, movies including dancing had muted backgrounds so the dancers would stand out. The color shot of Fred and Ginger and a busy background taking away from the dancers. When you watch K-pop dancers, it is much easier to see their very intricate moves with plain backgrounds and the color of their costumes do not detract from, but add to, the moves. This program was not able to realize what real color looked like and how it would change their beloved films in the remakes. Remakes (reboots) are horrid anyway. And, yes, Manhattan may be drab in real life, but can you imagine West Side Story in black and white?

OSB in color just wouldn't be the same. Also, read somewhere that actors are more challenged in b/w films because they can't use color as a crutch to convey emotions. Implied is that acting is generally better in b/w films than in color films.

@@lestatangel I generally prefer character actors -- especially British. Women get beat up pretty badly making a success in Hollywood . . .
