Ninth in a series of movies/television episodes that are similar in content and style to "One Step Beyond". This is a B&W version of "The Haunted Inn", Season 1 Episode 19 from the television series "The Next Step Beyond" (1978), the ill-fated sequel to OSB. This video courtesy of Mark Taylor. These episodes make you think and are well thought out . They didn't rely on a bunch of teenagers blundering around in the dark buckets of blood and cheesy dialogue to make you cringe.

Reminds me when a couple got lost in the mountains of California bc they tried to reach a very clear vivid sound of a waterfall. They walked and walked until they got lost, they did find a sad water flow that echo in the mountains it wasn't a waterfall. They were lost for a week before they were rescued.

Black and white is always better for a scare factor when the story has any intelligence and isn't just shock value scenes, it's the subtlety that gives it quality. More thought makes it scarier in your own mind, rather than you just being shown, I think.

Vincent Price always gave me the creeps when I was a kid. These black & white shows or movies just make it more classic and fun to watch. They don't make them any more. These poor kids are missing out, what we had growing up. Oh well....one day they will make fun of this generation. Lol!!

OSB was based on documented but inexplicable psychic experiences. I watched these as a boy and now, at 73, see them through a somewhat different lens. I am the firstborn of a very psychic mother and saw many examples of her ability. I inherited a tiny percentage of her gift, but enough to know real psychic ability exists. I could never control my minor talent, if that is even the right word, but I did experience many modest psychic occurrences. There have been fewer as I aged, and to be candid, I never liked having these things happen. None the less, psychic ability is real, though greatly imitated by hucksters.

That's how it is in my family, too. My mother had a strong psychic gift, and her mother did, too. I have a little of it, and when I was in my 20s and 30s, used CDs and something called a Nova Dreamer to help make it stronger, but I didn't like how it made me feel, so I stopped it.

I do too. I was watching my granddaughter over the weekend. I was watching episodes. She asked if she could watch something else. I asked why,and she said I don't like black and white shows. I said these are classic, some of the best shows, such as this one were made that way. She told me they were old and boring. Kids! I watched a couple more then let her watch. My kids,38,36,&32,all watched when they were young, but my daughter wasn't interested. My boys loved both OSB &TZ.

I always loved One Step Beyond but never saw this series and I am a real sucker for haunted house stories this one really creeped me out and head the hairs of my back standing up. The way they show the body of the older lady at the end was very realistic and creepy the way Rigamortis was setting in and she was locked in that posture of Terror was very chilling and creepy. Wonderful to see mr. Newland still quite poised and his old self here he aged very well and looks pretty healthy here still. Thanks for posting these and I just read you intentionally put this in black and white what a great idea it definitely adds to the mysteriousness of it! Thank you! You got a new subscriber. This one came as a surprise to me as I had never heard of The Next Step Beyond. The strange girl you meet on the road was a popular starting point for several stories in this genre. This is generally rated as the best of "The Next Step Beyond" episodes, which otherwise have a deservedly poor reputation among OSB admirers. The single, 25-episode season of the series was produced in color -- which, to my mind, just exacerbates its faults. So I've posted this in B&W to give it the best chance it can have . . .

A neighbor of mine told me that she and her husband frequently heard sounds of a party downstairs in her former home. Yet when she investigated, the noise ceased. Eventually she called down to the unseen party-goers. She urged them to go to the house next door. Those people spent their winters in Florida so that house was empty. They wouldn't disturb anyone trying to sleep. That was the last she heard of the merry makers.

I wasn't able to find much info on the internet other than Wikipedia info about Next Step Beyond and links to the episode. I'm curious about the "true story" the episode was based upon. I never heard of this sequel before! I have to agree, it’s nowhere near the quality of the original. Without more input from our host, John Newland it just doesn’t have the appeal. Also without the original theme music it just seems flat. I was seven when OSB started airing, my parents loved it and so did/do I, even if I didn’t understand a lot at that age. I thank you for posting all the content you have, and for letting us watch this single season. I’ve been binge watching the originals and thoroughly enjoying each and every one! ❤

I missed the creepy music in this one that the OSB earlier episodes had!

I take these stories as entertainment now ....not so at a young age when I watched these.... we grow in rationality as we age ... but still good stories...

YXou really can see the difference between ONE STEP BEYOND and i s spin off NEXT STEP BEYOND. Even though both is shot in B&W the used film material, fashion and behaviour of the actors are different parallel to the changed Zeitgeist in which both brilliant projects had been done :)
