Depending on the person doing it or rather the instructor teaching it. If it worked for you, you likely had a good instructor and are good yourself. Lots of Tang Soo Do people can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

i understand the purpose for it, not sure as to why you need to measure each time, Unless demoing for the lower belts. At the dans you both are you Both should already know Angle and Distance for Attack and Defense. we do the same in ITF TKD but with a few modifications, we also step out further, more of an angle move both feet

That's what I was thinking. What are 2 black belts (one supposedly a master) gauging distance doing something white and yellow belt do. If my old instructor saw me doing that he would look at me and say _"what the hell are you doing? You're a black belt."_

As long as people understand this is not for PRACTICAL application. One steps are for kids to practice their blocks and strikes against a compliant attacker. Timing and distance is definitely a benefit. But the movements should be somewhat practical. Otherwise you are wasting time by creating bad muscle memory. 4th dan Taekwondo 1st dan Hapkido

One step sparring is what ruined martial arts such as Tand Soo Doo. Do not get in the habit of practicing this!
