Theory notes: chords that are voiced as 1-5-10 (10=3 up an octave) are referred to as "open position" or "open structure" chords in music theory. Of course, this is not a great name to use in the context of guitar because "open chord" and "open position" means something else. Using widely spaced voicings like this can help music sound more clear and open. "closed position" chords will give a denser sound that may become muddy, especially in lower frequencies.
