I’m running curse of Strahd right now for the first time and my party hasn’t even finished the death house and I have 1 dead player and 1 traumatized player because she spent so long looking for the none existing baby and when she found out about the death kids and the baby she looked so sad. And I felt super bad and slightly traumatized myself about the kids and they don’t even know about the cult stuff yet. I feel horrible because this is the first time a PC has died in one of my campaigns and I basically traumatized both a player and myself with the dead kids thing. Only upside was the player who died had me burn their character sheet and for some reason we all like burning things so it was bittersweet burning it.

The first ever campaign I played was CoS and the death house is terrifying as a level 1 when you have like 6-8 health going for you. I almost got one-shot by a FUCKING BROOM in the death house. I touched a broom, not knowing it was a Broom of Animated Attack because I thought a magic broom would be useful, it dodged my attempts to stop it from bonking everyone and it rolled a nat 20 on hitting me. Thankfully I succeeded my death saves. Although it would have been really funny if the party lost its only cleric 5 seconds into the first round of combat without even getting to the vampire/cultist people yet

I’m also running CoS, and we got a player casualty in the Death House. It was definitely a wake up call for the players that Barovia isn’t a walk in the park. If they aren’t careful, it can eat them alive. Literally, in most cases. 🥴
