You could see throughout season 5 and their scenes that he really loves Peyton, he just didn't want to admit it because he was afraid of getting hurt again, when Peyton was the only person that could ever hurt him so much. Just the look in Lucas's eyes you can tell he really loves Peyton.

Circumstances dictated everything and timing but I really think Lucas was caught off guard when Peyton came back into town from her internship in LA after it went South. He was really caught off guard just as he was trying to move on. Life question I’ve been asking is why do they do that? Why do they always catch you off guard?

Lucas was so dumb letting Peyton walk away like that. Hilarie never gets the props as an actress but she owned season 5 and 6. When she wasnt in final 3 seasons the show really lost a vital part. Its amazing how strong the female leads were in this show and how unique their personalities were. Peyton will always be my favorite.

Man Hilarie Burton was so great in this scene. She has the greatest voice and delivery plus those eyes. How Lucas could ever let her walk in that moment was dumbfounding but thank goodness he clued in as this girl is for life.

Lucas can't protect his heart from Peyton on his own.He was too afraid or getting hurt again so when Peyton never showed up at his book signing he went out with Lindsey to protect his heart from the pain (rebound). When Lindsey, AKA shield no.1 was about to leave him he proposed to stop her. When she left, he started to spend time with Brooke AKA shield no.2 and avoid Peyton at all cost because he simply couldn't resist her but was too afraid of getting hurt again after she refused to marry him.

the most heartbreaking scene. I don't think i could have forgiven him so easily. 1) she never turned down his proposal. 2) it was not her fault that he was living with his married brother & best friend making him want what they had. Out of all people, Lucas KNEW what Peyton went through and how much she needed to find herself. Asking him to wait ONE YEAR was not asking too much. He even said "when we get back to Tree Hill" during his little proposal like she was not there in L.A. trying to find herself. He was an inconsiderate prick who put both of them through too much turmoil. She was right, he gave up on them. And after he said "I do" to Lindsey, Peyton should have made him FIGHT FOR HER. She just loved him too much to do it.

I think we all or most of us had this identical experience usually in our 20s, feeling death through the eyes of someone that don't feel the exact same way back or are so stubborn they give you no sign of remorse, off n on relationships are so common these days bc ppl honestly deep down never let go, pride brings this, then u suffer latter, young ppl in the last 20ys have been so cruel n soulless to thoes they shared lives with, when u give your world to someone n they don't return it more often u no longer want to live bc our humanity is so venerable, we are really never the same after, so u take it out on future interests, God I hate love shows bc they always take us bk to painful memories

Watched all 6 seasons recently and how anyone doesnt see this couple as the thread that pulls the whole show together is beyond me. I knew it from episode one season one when he opens up to her and they connect when he tows her car. Its a great scene and one you know will set the table for the whole series. Im so happy the writers kept true to this as Peyton and Lucas needed to be together.

They were what I call the in betweens. Lucas learned with Brooke and Lindsey what not to do when it came back to Peyton and Peyton learned with both Jake. She learned with Julian during that four year timespan when they were apart. As they got older they weren’t gonna make those same mistakes again. Lucas and Peyton found their way back.

I think Chad cheated because he was never fully whole hearted in in love w/Sophia. I think it was two young kids who met on a show that lusted. Chad goes all the way back w/Hilary on the show Dawson Creek. I remember him in a interview saying, how he crushed on Hilary then & she turned him down. You can see the real caring in videos they had for each other. To this day they are still the best of friends.

I really like them individually and their acting skills are remarkable, especially Hilary, but I never liked them as a couple in this drama. There were sweet moments but somehow it just didn't settle with me.
