As a keyboardist of some 25+ years, I am working hard to declare the guitar as my official second instrument. I'm obviously accustomed to moving one figure each and every time I play a note, so exercises like this are particularly helpful in visualizing the fretboard and executing scales more like a true guitarist. Much appreciated.
@jmc63267 ай бұрын
Random, but Levi Clay's guided practice routines for guitar book may help you further your scale/arpeggio visualization. It works your technique and fretboard knowledge at the same time. Only ten-minute lessons, and he plays along with you in the audio. Also, take the time to memorize the natural notes on each string. It will really unlock all of your previous keyboard knowledge. Guitar is about to be your 1b instrument!

I started to play at a very young age, so, for me, it's kind of a second nature what I do with my hands/fingers; and because of that, I've never been able to convey to my son how exactly I play, so It's been very frustrating while trying to teach him. This video made me understand the appropriate finger position required to play efficiently. Hitherto I have been practising or playing with my hands in a very faulty position, that is when I touch the notes in sequence with my index middle and ring finger my pinky goes up and away automatically from the fretboard causing it to move thrice the distance compared to the rest to get onto the fretboard and hence it has always remained unsynchronised.

For classical guitar, this makes sense because there is no bending. As he mentioned, while bending, this hand position will not be ideal because there is no leverage. Most runs with any flavor will have bends. This is good for runs like Eric Johnson does where he knows there are no bends. Just be a few steps ahead of yourself and use this hand positioning where it serves you.
@ModernGolfer5 жыл бұрын
I dunno, after trying this for 11 months, this is pretty much my 'standard' hand position when playing and bending isn't really any more 'difficult' for most notes. Strings are 'standard' 10's, so lighter stringers would be even easier, IMO.

Firstly Thank you Carl, many have tried to show me how , but all have failed until this day! So here are my Takeaways, keep your wrist straight (parallel to the fret board), position of thumb is key, not too high and not too low on the neck. Distance to the fret board has to be so that you can bend your fingers so that your tips of your fingers are able to use less pressure and improves accuracy. Your index finger is your best guide based on your individual hand size, so practice by laying your index finger flat and do a full bar. Got it! now practice
@sameenakausar10206 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel ! I read your comments and thought of asking your help. As far as my wrist is concerned ,its straight,my fingers are cupped and are placed at 90 degree angle , but the only problem is with my thumb. I cannot keep my thumb hidden behind the fret board,it always shows up. I hold the back of the guitar with my thumb bent at the joint and is it is visible unlike all guitar players who play well. If I try to place my thumb in the middle then my pinky doesn't reach the 6th string [low E string] and my fingers start forming an angle instead of staying straight at 90 degrees, but when my thumb is bent and placed on the top part of the fret board,everything works fine,except for the thumb position. When I play placing the index finger in the bar position as shown by Carl in the video,the only change is my thumb doesn't bend any more but is still visible and not hidden behind the fret board. Not sure how to correct my thumb position in my case. Sorry for bothering you Daniel ! Goodnight !

@@sameenakausar1020 Hi Sameena, Sorry for the late reply, I didn't realize that someone had left a comment/question. Now I am not sure if you are playing on an electric guitar or an Acoustic, I only bring this up because after switching to an electric guitar I found that I didn't need to put as much pressure on the strings and since the body is not as wide as an acoustic, it was easier to wrap my fingers around the neck. What I have recently learned is that the thumb is great for sliding up and down the neck, but I don't need to apply so much pressure giving me the flexibility to let the guitar rest in my palm, only exception is bar chords like F Bar Chord, but even that has become less because I have gradually begun building up enough strength in my fingers, especially my pinky finger. You mentioned your thumb, sounds like you will have an easier time with playing like Jimi Hendrix (Lucky you) as well as bends. Now I am only 2 yrs into this wonderful journey, but I notice that my thumb is not always going to be pointing straight up but points more towards the guitar head stock, this helps me in aligning my wrist so that with the tip of my pinky finger I can reach the low E string, see Carl's tutorial for "Message in a bottle" by the Police, I have found this so useful for working on dexterity, understanding that the pinky is less flexible than my index finger and middle finger. I practice the Spider technique placing my index on the 8th low E and the other fingers on the next 3 frets. so for Low E and A string my wrist is is slightly more forward in front of the neck and as I go down the strings I move my wrist slightly backwards towards my body. I have no idea if this helps answering your question completely, as we all have different hand sizes. Best of luck and keep at it, it so exciting when you begin hearing yourself sounding like the song that you are practicing. My last suggestion, find a someone who plays the guitar, show them where you are in your progress and any seasoned guitar like Carl, would be able to tell exactly what to do within seconds. its one of the awesome things about music, its universal and they all speak the same language when it comes to techniques.

My fingers are quite long, so may be,the thumb protrudes out.I tried a lot to make my pinky reach the low E string while concealing my thumb behind the fret board but it doesn't work out when it comes to low" E" string. Rest is all fine and I don't have to apply pressure while playing notes with my bent thumb. Even I follow the spider technique which has increased my speed while playing notes.Earlier my fingers used to dance all around the place,all wide spread and I never gained speed .Now my playing speed has increased while playing "Pentatonic scales" Thanks for sharing this info about Carl's ,"Message in a bottle by the Police" and Jimmy Hendrix.I'll watch their videos for sure tonight. Interesting, I’ve been playing a long time (that doesn’t make me a great player, I started too late in life) and still have issues dropping my fret fingers down too low, hitting just below the string I need, so I look for ways to improve my finger placement precision and who shows up? Carl Brown, of course. I’ll definitely try this, and I’m starting to think I should take some of his online courses. This dude is the BEST guitar teacher on KZbin. His song lessons are the best, bar none. I’ve been sub’d to him for years and years.
