I was reading that a problem with a lot of the people there is Xylazene which is what makes them bend over Its just a filler as its cheap but it destroys nerve coverings The damage from it isn't recoverable A lot of the people are from other states because drugs are easier to get in Kensington Ave. and they were trying to get those states to contribute towards the cost of dealing with it This looks a lot better than it did 6 months ago but its still chronic Fewer people - but I wonder where they sent the rest to

Nothing changed. If addicts cannot be taken off the streets and cared for/treated because of American laws, the best thing would be to strongly crack down on drug sales in this region. Looks to me they have done what they set out do & it has a good chance of staying that way. The problem has just moved to the side streets. One of the reasons why the city wants the clean up is probably that the area will be developed into high end properties. Thats how it is done. Let an area deteriorate, buy the property at extremely low prices & the ability to gain expedited permits & approvals.

Cleaning the streets is not going to suddenly make addicts clean, too….but the superficial change is utterly astounding! Now, they should continue to make sure the street stays clean not for another couple of weeks, but full time, including the surrounding areas, and pinpoint people who clearly need help immediately! How Philly let “Kensington” happen in the first place just blows my mind as this should have been done YEARS ago, before it got utterly insane.

It’s used in medicine for acute pain relief when administered correctly! As a street drug, it can be sold as anything, heroin, cocaine, whatever the dealer wants to sell it as! @@bran1886 I agree, a change in state and local government would certainly throw a cat amongst the pigeons, but the likelihood of that happening is zero!Philadelphia has been a Democrat strongholds for around 70 years. The reason for this is simple, the voter demographic in the city is pro dominantly blue and the reds are out numbered! In saying that, newly elected mayor, although being Democrat, has certainly made her presence felt and is spearheading a campaign to clean up Kensington and the city’s drug problem! But the community needs to be realistic in their expectations. Drug use is a social issue which is created by a group of individuals (in) the community. This is why they can’t be solved, you can’t stop people from doing dumb shit! As I said earlier, I agree with you, the leadership certainly needs a good shake up and nothing meaningful will change until that happens! In my opinion, all levels of government need to take a more authoritarian approach to drug management in the country. Laws need to change, crime must not go unpunished and people should be held accountable! Their rights and freedoms removed until they are fit to return to the community as productive citizens! State governments should also be held accountable for every cent of federal funding received and should not be allowed to undermine Federal Drug Control. The November elections will be an interesting one. The Trump Administrations campaign has 15 pledges to solve America’s woes. These include immigration, drug trafficking, education reform, national guard management etc! If elected, the 2024 elections will be a defining moment in American history, and has the potential to change how the world views the American Nation, and its ripple effect will be felt for generations! Just food for thought 💭

I have to give them credit. It's 100% better than it was - at least visually. Every street this dude walked on was trash covered from building to curb. Don't see that here. Tents? Not here. Are a few stragglers in the area - sure. That's expected. But the concentration of people that have been in this three-five week zone is about 5% of what it was pre-cleanup. Do they need to do more? Absolutely. They need to get people to take over those empty businesses again. The tents at least used to hid the roll-down gates during the middle of the day showing how many of those businesses were no longer existing. I'm sure most people want 100% turnaround instantly . Things in the real world just don't happen that way. This is a huge win for the Mayor and the city. Now, if the degen's are now occupying a different area of the city and will turn that into the next Kensington - that would be a nil. No progress - simply maneuvering things for a political snapshot. They need to keep up with this - and not just for a month or two. It took about 2-3 years for K&A and the area to absolutely go down the drain. It often takes two times that to get it fixed again. Kudos to all involved and I really hope they stick with it.

I agree, Mayor Parker has achieved more in her first 130 days in office than previous mayors combined for decades! A key promise in her election campaign was to clean up Kensington Avenue which she has delivered. The addicts and homeless are gone and the trash has been removed and all the sidewalks have been pressure washed. It’s certainly a vast improvement and pleasing to see! But the community must also be realistic in their expectations as well! Cleaning the streets and moving the addicted and homeless on was the easy part. Now the real challenge starts, managing the problem in a sustainable way! A lot of comments focused on the fact many of the people have only moved around the corner and into surrounding streets, which is true, but the encampments are gone. This step was very important because Parker is now enforcing loitering laws. They are constantly being moved along by law enforcement officers, if they settle on the sidewalk, they are arrested! This strategy is the first step in managing the addicts! When they loiter they’re arrested, then they’re offered 30 days rehab or 30 days in jail it’s their choice! For those who choose rehab, during treatment they offered assistance to take advantage of all the government benefits and programs to aid them into recovery. For those who chose jail, they face withdrawal with prison based treatment! When they are discharged from rehab or released from jail, they can either choose to continue their journey to recovery or return to the streets. If they choose the latter, the cycle begins again, loitering, arrest, rehab or jail and release! Eventually they become overwhelmed with the cycle and start making better choices! The process has its limitations, but it’s another step in the right direction! As for Kensington Avenue, there’s a lot of talk about rejuvenating the whole area, council buy backs and redevelopment etc. I doubt it will return to its original status as a residential and retail hub but it will make some sort of comeback! Only time will tell!

@@joananthony6323 Kensington Avenue and the surrounding areas has always been a medium to long socioeconomic district. It has had a checkered past surrounding drug use, racial segregation and discrimination and very questionable government policies and leadership! That being said, in the 1950’s it was a thriving urban community with a mix demograph. The streets were lined with retail stores, restaurants, grocery shops and other small commercial businesses! As for employment, in the 1950’s Philadelphia was the hub of the US textile industry, and the Mills were located in the Kensington Avenue district! The community continued to prosper until the late 50’s to the early 60’s before manufacturing was taken off shore to save on costs! Since then, the district, the community and Kensington Avenue has slowly declined into what we see today. Rows of abandoned buildings, businesses and homes with the majority of the population now drug addicts, dealers and the homeless! It’s a very sad tale but it one that’s being heard in many other cities in the US. If you want to dig deeper, there’s website, photo galleries etc on the net!

5:15, was the cop just standing over the poor guy until you reached closer to him? My glasses aren't doing me much justice these days 🤦🏽‍♀️A damned shame, if that's the case 😢 We've been having the same issues up here, in Montréal, since a lil before the pandemic started. It's a lot worse now. Instead of the addicts claiming a few métro stations (downtown), it's past the dt area, and up to 4 more stations have been claimed. I just found out that we have our version of Vancouver's East Hastings alley; ours is called Allée du Crack (crack alley; how original). It takes up a few streets By 2019, crack wasn't really crack any longer. I lost a dear friend in my life due to smoking what he thought was crack, then. There were traces of fentanyl in his system. He'd started smoking about 6 months prior to his death. I wish we could've seen the signs earlier. It's terrible how the homeless are treated, and there aren't enough resources or enough qualified workers to help them. This epidemic was amplified by the pandemic. It's fkn scary fr fr Keep doing what you're doing, spreading awareness 🙏🏽🙏🏽 I wish to do the same for the greater Mtl area, up here, eventually. There isn't that much of any up and close exposure here. We do deal with a lot of gangs de rues (street gangs), especially s@x trafficking. It's pretty fkn bad up here, too. It's mainly Toronto, Calgary, or Vancouver - now Ottawa, too - that gets a lil more coverage on the fentanyl crisis Anyway, this shit's been up here for a minute. It's gotta bounce out from everywhere! I'm praying that this epidemic gets healed and rid of, for good 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Legalise it all and have it provided to them so the cartels and criminal underworld make no money but on the condition these people move into specific areas designated for their lifestyle. There is no fixing these people unless they want to be fixed and clearly what we are doing is not working. Separating those who want to participate in society from those who don't care at all is a necessary start

The only difference between them is 3 are socially acceptable and 1 is a social taboo! 3 are controlled by the government and 1 isn’t…. and as we all know, people love shit that shouldn’t have!!! Living in a town of 3,000 people, I sometimes wonder if kids who were raised here might think of the closest "city" (pop 85,000) as being.... A hellscape of open-air drug markets with a rampant homeless population who only hacve themselves to blame, with the ubiquitous hyper-militarized police force waiting for a chance to baton them. --Given the limits of our experience, and the extent of the world that we get to see in our lives... every place inevitably looks different to someone.
