In China's Shanxi province the rate of children born with congenital defects is six times the national average. With many of these infants abandoned, a remarkable figure has embarked on a heartbreaking mission.
Kong Zhenlan's 31 adopted children were all born with defects and abandoned by their poverty-stricken parents in an area devastated by coal pollution. "When I started claiming for these children's rights, the officials would insult me." The tiny but indomitable 'Mama Kong' stood up to the bullying for the sake of her constantly growing brood. "They tried to intimidate me to make me give up. They don't dare anymore." For over 20 years she has fought for identity cards, operations to fix their deformities and a place at school for each child. Mama Kong's work may be a drop in the ocean, but thanks to her this small group of youngsters now have the rare chance of a normal life.

Such a wonderful lady and beautiful children. As a girl, I had a 'Chinese sister', well she was actually from Hong Kong and was the youngest of three children. She was still a baby on formula milk when she came to live with us. I'm in England and her parents ran a food takeaway shop and my mother worked for them. They told my mother they had no time for the baby so asked my mum to raise her. They'd come and take her for day trips etc..but she lived with us, and slept in a cot between me and my sisters beds. I adored her. She was with us a few years with her parents still in her life. She would've been perhaps four when her parents decided they'd got enough time to care for her and they took her back. I was gutted as I especially loved her, my bio sister was very jealous of the attention Elenor received.

She apparently has a link to NGO’s that pay for it, which most parents wouldn’t even know about or how to secure. They also wouldn’t necessarily know that a defect, such as a cleft lip/palate, can be fixed cosmetically. Even if they did, it often takes more than one operation, there are follow-up visits, requiring the parents to make multiple journeys to the hospital, which they might not be able to even afford the fares. Then there’s the long run, with the culture expecting sons to marry and he and daughter-in-law take care of his parents in their old age. She’s expected to perform the cooking, household chores, hands-on physical care. Grandchildren are also desired. So, if a son is defective, his marriage prospects are even less than they already are, considering the one child policy has resulted in males outnumbering females (2013 stats for rural areas was 115:100).

This is a remarkable women I work with disabled childern if I could help her I would. I look at these lovable childern and think which one who I take. If I take one I leave the rest behind. I couldn't do that four or five in my home to be adopted. Don't matter what the disabilities are they deserve a family that loves them. I'm not done with this story yet.

It's sad that they have to go through all that they have to go through and they abandon the babies cuz really the surgery would probably be free to them too. So you just threw a baby away for no damn reason. I don't understand why they still use coal for electricity when they could easily do it through hydroelectricity. It doesn't have the same harmful effects as cold as Cole does. It blows my mind that everywhere in the world isn't either using hydroelectric or some other form of electricity other than burning coal and other fossil fuels I mean you can see what it does.

The natural parents likely do not have the money. Because she takes in so many children the surgery is done for free. Also, this was during the “one child” law. Each family had one opportunity to have a healthy child- and they weren’t allowed to have more.
