This is very inspiring to me. 😁 I have a similar yard (huge and empty), and I've had a hard time figuring out what to do with all the space. I did plant an in-ground garden, but it wasn't worth the work (looking back now). Our soil is terrible - super hard and full of rocks and boulders. I'm going to follow a little of what you've done and work with containers from now on. 😁
@1Lightdancer3 жыл бұрын
You can do a lot in containers, and so many options! Peter Chan wrote one of the early books on raised bed gardening, Better Vegetables the Chinese Way - love that book! He and his wife lived in the West hills of Portland Oregon, with lots of rocks - which they used for paths! They did dig as preparing the beds - I like Charles Downing no dig method - start bed at a time - perhaps take our visible rocks, then lay down cardboard and cover with compost!

It's all looking fantastic, Kevin. Regarding the in-ground worm bins, we have been experimenting with putting smaller ones in all of our raised beds. They are made out of leftover pvc piping with some holes drilled in the sides, and some old plastic plant pots buried so the lip sits just below the soil level. Place a terracotta saucer upside down over the top and a full terracotta pot on top with some pretty succulents or a drought tolerant pollinator. This keeps the system sealed and stops rodents getting in. Then we've bought in compost worms to add. I'm keen to try one of these larger in-ground systems like you have also. We've got into the habit of composting most of our cardboard and paper waste. A friend even feeds old clothes to her in-ground worm bin. I'm keen to get to the same level of worm farming as she is! Landfill waste generates so many environmental impacts, the more we can process our own organic wastes at home, the better.

Two things for your moth/worm problem if I may. Plant basil next to or under, anything that is attacked by moths and or worms. I used to think it was through the air, but this year, I had some tomatoes in pots as well, and the one I didn't have a basil plant in got tobacco hornworms, although luckily, a couple birds eradicated them in a few hours. So apparently, whatever is in basil is absorbed through the roots. I'd give that a try next year, and also, put some birdhouses and feeders out there to attract the enemy of all worms and caterpillars directly among your plants. Oh, and your new place is looking good, BTW.

I have found that a mesh covering works well for keeping the cabbage worms off. One year I found a mosquito tent used for camping and I set that up over all my brassicas and no worms! I also use mesh cloth laundry sacks(available at WalMart) to cover individual plants. I use a tomato wire cage( the cheap ones that we don't use for tomatoes) as a frame and then put the mesh bag over the frame and secure with the drawstring to keep bugs out. Works pretty good, certainly cuts down on the worms, but you still have to check.

@gwendolyninthegarden9003 жыл бұрын
I found dwarf corn at Baker Creek, Botanical Interests and at my local hardware store. Blue Jade is bred for containers, it’s a fresh and dried variety (not very sweet as it’s an older style but delicious if eaten a few minutes after picking or dried as flour), Strawberry popcorn does great in containers as does Early Sunglow sweet corn. Since corn needs to be planted in groups or blocks I would use either a very large grow bag (one of the 50 gallon or so that looks like a giant raised bed) or a kids plastic paddling pool with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.

I really hooe he uses biodegradable soaps/detergent! This wouldn't even be legal where I live unless you have a small water cleaning facility. It might not affect the plants right away but in the long run it will kill all the microbes in the soil. Even biodegradable soaps and detergents aren't really made to be used for watering the same spot of soil over and over :/ They are made to protect microbes in the water bodies in which cleaning facilities lead their cleaned water (because many compounds in soap and other cleaning products can't be filtered out)

Kevin my fig tree is growing very large but not producing any fruit, how can I help the tree to produce
@ariel97763 жыл бұрын
I'm obviously not Kevin but i wanna help! How old is your fig tree? If it is mature enough to produce fruit, it sounds like it could be getting too much nitrogen(plenty of leaf/branch growth and no fruit) if you think it's too much nitrogen you could start using a fertilizer lower in nitrogen or add some phosphorous to the soil to even out the nitrogen levels. Hope this helps!
@anonemouse43083 жыл бұрын
Figs tend to have a growing phase followed by a fruiting phase, with minimal or no fruit in the growing phase. This is usually determined by root space. A constrained root system due to being in a pot or hard soil will lead to early fruiting. Deep, fertile soil will lead to several years of growth with no fruit, until the plant is mature.
@anonemouse43083 жыл бұрын
If your fig plant is growing rapidly, don't expect to see fruit until it reaches maturity. Limiting the root system by creating an underground barrier of rocks or bricks can speed up fruiting. As can transplanting to a container.

Just a wee tip with your citrus hedge, as a general rule of thumb try to keep as much distance between your lemon trees and other citrus tree. Lemons planted next to other citrus will cross pollinate and cause other citrus to set more pips in the fruit. If you don’t mind the extra pips, it’s not a problem.

The market is nuts, so who knows what will happen, but I’m putting in an offer on a house on 1.17 acres. I’ll have to focus my time and funds on the house itself before doing anything major in the garden, but I’m sure I’ll get at least one bed going as soon as possible. I’ll take all the epic blessings I can get in this wild market.

Ok, pause... Words of wisdom "Always be sewing" , I've got it written in all my garden notebooks, on my dry erase board in my cellar garden. Yet have been so caught up getting what's growing Going that I haven't sewn a seed in weeks. I gotta get going (and Sewing)! Thanks for the reminder!!!

About the potatoes - I just found a box of the remainder of last year's Adirondack Blues (my favorite), and they all have sprouts at least 2' long. So yeah, you can plant them deep; They'll come up. 😄

Thanks for letting us come along on the journey, was both fun and informative to watch! Crazy to see everything you added in, yet THERE'S STILL SO MUCH ROOM LEFT! Hahaha

Lots accomplished by you in a very short time. 👍🏻 We’ve had 3 seasons since our latest move and some things are just finally ramping up here in our challenging zone 5. It’s a matter of persistence and patience/trial and error especially when so much time has to be initially spent correcting flawed so called improvements or just plain neglect that previous owners leave you with. 🙄 It’s always more enjoyable to nurture enthusiasm from what you’ve accomplished than criticize yourself for what you haven’t yet done. If you’ve done that much in 9 months…..think of how much more will be completed in the next 9. Thanks for the update. 😊

And I tend to be the same when it comes to thinking about all that I still want to do instead of realize how much I've already done... Sometimes we just have to be intentional about stopping and taking a look at the progress. 🙂 You're doing a great job turning this property into the home you desire!

My GreenStalk while outside is for flowers as well But next seasons planting will be inside, with vertical lighting support, will be intended to reduce my fresh food bills.
